USA Coach Bob Bradley: Of Course I'm Interested In Aston Villa Job

Will TideyAug 22, 2010

US coach Bob Bradley is interested in becoming Aston Villa manager and would be "honored" to table talks with club owner Randy Lerner.

After Martin O'Neill resigned on the eve of the new EPL season, leaving reserve team coach Kevin McDonald in temporary control, Bradley was quickly established among the favorites to take over.

If he does arrive at Villa Park, the 52-year-old will become the first American to manage in the Premier League. He will be tasked with working alongside fellow countryman Lerner, who also owns the Cleveland Browns NFL franchise.

When asked if he'd be interested in the job, Bradley told the BBC: "Of course. Villa is a massive club, with a great history and a great following.

"Those opportunities would of course be of interest. It's pretty clear that Randy Lerner has done a solid job where tradition is kept."

Bradley's contract with the US national team runs until the end of the year, and having taken the team to the knock-out stages of the 2010 World Cup, they will be keen to keep him. The lure of the Premier League may prove too strong.

Bradley has "always been excited about the possibility of working in Europe," and with his stock at an all-time high, this could prove his best chance of landing a high-profile position.

Villa are keen to move fast on recruiting O'Neill's long-term replacement, and had hoped to fill the role before their second EPL game of the season, which saw them hammered 6-0 at Newcastle.

Sven-Goran Eriksson and Gareth Southgate have also been linked to the role, and there remains the possibility McDonald could be handed a full-time contract.

After Villa's comprehensive defeat at St James' Park, the smart money is on McDonald being moved along in the coming week.

This will allow Bradley to continue his remarkable journey from Assistant Coach at the University of Virginia, via the MLS and US national team to the Premier League.
