Anaheim Ducks: Three Keys To Success This Season

Todd CordellAug 22, 2010

This is a new 30 part series I will be doing for each and every team. Most days I will only do one but some days you might see two or three teams done, so stay tuned.

In no particular order here are the Anaheim Ducks three keys to success this season.

Penalty Kill

Kucherov Landing Spots

The Anaheim Ducks were 24th in the NHL last season killing off just 79.3% of their penalties. If the Ducks can jump up into the top 15 it will dramatically increase their chances of making the playoffs.

Shots Against

Jonas Hiller is one of the more talented goalies in the league, no doubt about that; however, the Anaheim Ducks MUST decrease the average shot total against per game.  Last season they were 29th in the NHL with an average of 33.4 shots against per game. If the Anaheim Ducks want to make the playoffs this year, they are going to have to help Hiller out.

Secondary Scoring

If the Ducks have any hope of making a postseason run this season, they need secondary scoring.

They have one of the most dominant lines in the NHL up front with Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan, but after that there is a pretty big drop off. Teemu Selanne must contribute the way he did last season (I think he can) and players like Joffrey Lupul, Saku Koivu, and Jason Blake must contribute more than they did last season.

If the Ducks do not improve on at least two of these things, they will probably be golfing come April.
