Statman's R&D: Preseason Risers

A JAug 22, 2010

drum roll...

CJ Spiller RB BUF – Spiller the Killer is a dynamic runner that torched everyone on a 31 yard TD run in the first quarter against Indy.  Not since AP’s rookie season have I seen a player toy with an NFL defense like that.  With Fred Jackson out the first two weeks of the season, Spiller will get every chance to shine.  Marshawn Lynch should not be considered a threat with the tortoise leg numbers he posted in 2009.

Tom Brady QB NE – Brady was 10 for 12 with 85 yards and a TD against the Falcons and looked very sharp.  With Moss working like a horse in training camp expect big things from the two forgotten 2007 MVP’s.  All crickets out of NE right now.  Brady is flying his stealth bomber this year in the 3rd round.

DeSean Jackson WR PHI – One of the fastest men in the NFL, Jackson showed again why he is being undervalued in drafts by catching 4 balls for 74 yards against Cincy.  This guy seems to be open every play.  It’s a secret, but he should get 15+ carries on reverses this year.  Shhhhh.

Mike Wallace WR PIT – Wallace dominated defenses down the field in 2009.  With a 68 yard TD catch against the Giants he showed again why should be considered a steal in the 8th or 9th round.  When Big Ben comes back watch out!

Santana Moss WR WAS – With 4 catches for 79 yards against Baltimore, Moss showed why he will be hard to unseat as the #1 in Washington.  McNabb loved throwing to the speedy DeSean Jackson and Santana is a similar type player.  Look for the two to become a nice team in 2010.

Mike Williams WR TB – With this guys name being thrown around on every sleeper list in America I figured I would keep this short.  Mike is an absolute steal in the 11th round.

Mike Sims-Walker WR JAX – While I’m not too sold on David Garrard, you can’t deny what Sims-Walker did last year.  Hauling in 3 balls for 64 yards against Miami could be a preview of 2010.  You should feel good about his prospects.

Jake Delhomme QB CLE – Delhomme was 12-16 for 127 yards against the Rams and scouts say he looks like a different QB this year.  I’m not buying it but the numbers sure are.

Reggie Bush NO RB – Don’t look now but Mr. ex-Heisman could make some serious waves in 2010.  He just went for 49 yards and a TD on 7 carries against the Texans and could be a serious red zone threat for NO.  The Saints will definitely have enough TD’s to go around so consider the Run/Catch machine to be a five finger discount in the 6th round.

Arian Foster RB HOU – Foster the Monster.  Take him a round earlier or you might not get him.  He showed explosive ability in 2009 and Kubiak raves about him.  The monster could be THE steal of the draft.  Houston will be in the red zone a ton this year and Mr. Fumbles aka “Steve Slaton” won’t sniff the ball inside the 5.

Louis Murphy WR OAK – Murphy is quickly becoming Campbell’s favorite downfield target.  He should be worth a late-round flyer if you run out of names.

Malcom Floyd WR SD – The 6’5 stud receiver will make all the #83 jerseys disappear in the stands by week 4.  Philip Rivers will go to him early and often.  Expect big things from Floyd.  Vincent Jackson won’t take a snap for SD in 2010.

Jahvid Best RB DET – Most of the 1st year RB’s are being undervalued.  Here is another example of a dynamic rookie that will see lots of pigskins. He had 10 touches for 59 yards against Denver and will be a yardage hound.  You could do worse with a mid-4th round pick

Jermichael Finley TE GB – Finley is arguably the best TE on the board in 2010.  With Rodgers looking like the second coming of Favre, Finley could easily top 10 TD’s and has a chance for 1,000 yards.  Don’t sleep on this guy.
