Brad Childress is a Puppet

Pardon My Bias Bleacher ReportAug 19, 2010

With all this talk about Brett Favre going on about whether he will come back or not, one person has gotten a free ride by NFL fans and the media–Brad Childress. Childress has done nothing as a coach to put any kind of timeline or restrcition on the Favre issue. He has created a double standard in the locker room and is going to lose respect for it (he’s lost mine). Brad Childress has become a puppet and it’s actually Brett Favre that runs the Minnesota Vikings.

Last year Childress got a contract extension from the Vikings after they were off to their hot 8-1 start with Favre under the gun. Granted Childress had done a good job improving the team in years past, it was Brett Favre that got him the extension. Without Favre, the Vikings would be an average team, and Childress is just an average coach. He puts on an act in the media as a tough, no tolerance coach, but when it came to the Favre issue he folded like a sissy.

Just because Brett Favre is an established and storied quarterback, it doesn’t mean he can just hold off his decision. As much as everyone wants to make him a larger-than-life legend, the guy still has only won 1 championship in 19 seasons, but that’s another story. He has been built up by no one else but Brad Childress and ESPN. Childress refused to put a deadline on Favre because he knew at this point Favre had one up on him. Favre indirectly said “I got you your extension, don’t put your fake deadlines on me. You need me, and you know it, you’re nothing without me.” The sad part about that is, it’s the absolute truth. Childress just flew down to Mississippi to make sure Favre was coming back and he just wanted to skip training camp. That’s also the reason they offered him more money to come back. The money was never an issue, it was just Childress trying to pay back Favre for what he had done for him. Who pays someone extra when they never asked for it? Brett Favre is a mastermind at work, and honestly I don’t even think he needs an agent. He missed training camp, and he’s going to get more money, that’s unheard of.

If Favre is able to miss training camp just because he doesn’t feel like going to it, why are all the other players required to come? I don’t buy the ankle issue for a second, that was just a fluke. I understand Favre’s resume and his greatness, but the gripe I have with it is for his teammates who are working hard. Tavaris Jackson has been preparing to be the starter once again just to have his job snatched away from him one more time. Many players have come out and said they don’t care if Favre returns or not. No player likes OTAs and all the other off season workouts, but it’s a part of the job, and a part of the training.

The Vikings need Brett Favre, there is no doubt about it, they are a much better team with him. They were just one bad play away from the Super Bowl last year, and I think they will make another deep run into the playoffs again this year.

As sick as I am hearing about the Brett Favre coverage, I’m more sick of Brad Childress. He is a complete puppet to Brett Favre. Favre runs the team, and that probably for the better at this point. It’s time for Childress to step up as the leader he is supossed to be and grow a pair if he plans on coaching post-Favre.
