Tennessee Titans Training Camp: Five Players on the Outside Looking In
It's getting down to crunch time for many NFL players at this point. Many players are walking on thin ice when it comes to making their respective teams.
The rosters have to be cut down to at least 75 players by August 31 and then cut down again to a maximum of 53 players before the regular season starts.
That means that many coaches will have to cut players that they don't really want to.
Titans head coach Jeff Fisher is no different and as of right now there are plenty of current TItans players that are fighting for their NFL lives.
Here's five notable players that have a lot of work to do in the remaining preseason games.
Chris Simms (7/13, 24 yards against SEA)
1 of 5
It's hard to believe that at one point Chris Simms was a starter in the NFL, but now he's fallen on hard times.
He got shown up by the rookie Rusty Smith in the preseason opener. He looked afraid to throw anything past three or four yards and got sacked numerous times instead of throwing the ball away.
This team only needs three quarterbacks and we know Vince Young and Kerry Collins aren't going anywhere.
Simms will get plenty of playing time in the remainder of the preseason so he has to show this coaching staff that he's worth a valuable roster spot.
Ryan Mouton (Four tackles, one interception vs. SEA)
2 of 5
At first glance Ryan Mouton's stat sheet looks great against Seattle. Don't let the numbers fool you.
He missed at least two crucial tackles, including one that led to a touchdown, and his interception was just him happening to be in the right place at the right time.
Mouton can still very well win this starting job if he finishes out the preseason without missing tackles and blowing coverage.
In fact, that lucky interception may have saved him from falling way behind in this race for the starting job against Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner.
There's a lot of pressure on him to perform and make this team.
Paul Williams (One reception, 18 yards vs. SEA)
3 of 5
Paul Williams has been fighting to stay on the Titans for a couple years now.
He's been with the organization since 2007 when he was picked in the third round of the NFL Draft, but he's never really found solid spot on the roster.
He could be in danger of finally being cut by this team if he doesn't pick up his production this preseason.
Eventually Jeff Fisher and the rest of his coaching staff is going to lose faith Williams and go with someone new, like Marc Mariani.
Williams had two drops against Seattle.
Stafon Johnson (Three rushes, 23 yards vs. SEA)
4 of 5
Stafon Johnson's injury in his first NFL game was one of the more unfortunate things I've ever seen happen to a rookie.
Many of you probably remember his tragic weight-lifting accident that nearly took his life.
Johnson is now likely done for the 2010 season after having an impressive game up to the point of his ankle injury.
This situation bring up the fact that the NFL is a business, meaning the Titans couldn't save a roster spot for a player that will miss most of the season.
It's possible that Johnson could return to the Titans after his injury, but it's very unlikely. Johnson will have to take dramatic steps in his recovery for the Titans to lock up a roster spot for him.
Bobby Sewall (No receptions vs. SEA)
5 of 5
It's kind of important to show up on the stat sheet when you're fighting for a spot on the team.
Bobby Sewall didn't do that in the first preseason game so now he has to make up for that in the last three games.
The Titans are already extremely crowded at wide receiver and as of right now Sewall is dead last among wide receivers.
He has plenty of time to put together a couple solid performances.
Sewall will get several opportunities when Rusty Smith is in the game because the coaching staff is going to call numerous pass plays to see how Smith is progressing.
