A Mid-Major Super Conference? MWC and C-USA Talking Expansion?
The college football landscape endured quite some changes between the power conferences.
The Big 10, Pac 12, and the Big 12 were the conferences that were affected months ago by the new college landscape.
Earlier today, the Mountain West added Nevada and Fresno St to the conference, continuing to make it's case for being legitimate BCS conference.
However, this could be the beginning of big things for the Mountain West, and Conference USA?
According to Dan Wolken via twitter, " Houston Rivals site with two sources talking about 20-team super conference merger between MWC and C-USA. Sounds interesting and crazy".
"You'd essentially have 20% of Div. 1 in one conference, getting 10% of BCS pie. Still have-nots, but placated".
If this super conference would go down, it would be making a big case to officially become a BCS conference.
Though 20 teams does seem a little to much for football, if most of the teams from Conference USA would be willing to join, it would be worth it. This would become one of the more competitive conferences out there, as the path to the conference championship becomes that much harder.
Who knows if this is relativity possible, but maybe this was the recruiting pitch for the three teams from the WAC conference that are joining next year ( Boise St, Nevada, Fresno St).
We are in the stage of college football where programs are looking for the best chance to make revenue for the program.
A super conference involving the Mountain West and Conference USA may lead to a TV network in the future, and more interest to these programs.
Who knows. This could also be one idea that catches BYU's eye. The program has been rumored to be leaving the conference and become independent, but the expansion could persuade them to stay in the conference.
