Brad Childress Has Reportedly Lost Respect from Brett Favre and His Team

Old AccountAug 19, 2010

The Brett Favre saga made another wild turn on Tuesday, when No. 4 returned to the Minnesota Vikings during training camp.

Fans and players alike are rejoicing, as they should. Favre was a few plays away from a Super Bowl appearance last year, and his team is a contender in the NFC with Favre.

However, many have their doubts, and they should be cautious. People are skeptical of the terms Favre returned on. Is he near 100 percent after the ankle injury? Can he survive a whole season?

But maybe there is another aspect of this situation we never considered before. The idea of Brett Favre and Brad Childress being on a different page might have prompted Favre to hesitate on his return.

After reading Jason Cole's article on Yahoo! Sports, I came to the conclusion that this is more serious than I thought. It isn't just Favre and Brad Childress not being on the same page, it is the entire team.

Apparently there is no respect for Childress in that locker room:

"In short, even as Minnesota’s best hope to win a Super Bowl this season was rejoining the team, Childress was losing more ground with his team in the battle for respect. One of the biggest issues playing out behind the scenes in Minnesota is that many players, particularly on offense, have no respect for Childress."

You may think it is just Favre, who had a memorable disagreement with Childress last year in the loss to the Carolina Panthers. Apparently it is more than that. Many of the players agree with Favre when they say he had no idea about the offense.

"The heart of the conflict is Childress’ perceived lack of football savvy. Some players believe that most of the offensive coaching staff is made up of yes-men like Bevell. Furthermore, Childress is the type who doesn’t take outside ideas very well.

"'He has his way of doing things and that’s it,' a player said."

In conclusion, the summary of this article is pretty clear. Brett Favre was more worried about the power and authority Brad Childress holds than he was about the ankle he had surgery on a few months ago.

Look, the Vikings are going to be good. I see a bit of a decline in record, but this is a playoff team with Favre at the helm. It's a red flag to me if now we begin to hear that Brad Childress isn't respected by Brett Favre, or even worse, by the majority of his team.

Childress clearly has a lot of authority with the organization, and it only seems a matter of time until him and Favre clash like they did last season.

The Vikings have taken a hit for the way they brought in Favre this week. Some believe it is a lack of leadership and doesn't set a good example for the young players.

This all leads back to the head coach, who clearly wasn't going to prevent what the veterans decided to do.

As the season unfolds, we should expect the team to gather around Favre just like last year, and keep the dream of going to the Super Bowl.

For the Vikings' sake, Brad Childress can't get too involved in the offense, and he should let Favre handle it on his own.

No. 4 is the reason Childress still has the job as head coach, and if he gets in the way of Favre, it will turn out to be another disappointing year for Vikings' fans.
