Cruzin’ Towards T.O.

Pardon My Bias Bleacher ReportAug 18, 2010

Somebody call the cops! The Monday Night Football game was hijacked and taken over! We are now on the look out for a 6 foot man, weighing about 200 pounds and going by the name of Victor Cruz.

Yes that’s right. New York Giant wide receiver Victor Cruz totally took over the game against the New York Jets. He had 6 receptions for 145 yards while tallying up 3 touchdowns. It may have just been a preseason game but that is definitely a very impressive performance; it was so impressive that the last person to have caught 3 touchdowns in a preseason game was Terrell Owens.

I am in no way comparing this rookie to T.O. but am just stating that this kid may have a huge future ahead of him. The catches he made were not simple, routine catches. His first touchdown was a one handed grab, over the head, with a defender on him. It was simply a very, very impressive catch. He then went on to grab two more touchdown catches, each one just as impressive. Although it is impossible to read a player from just one preseason game, Cruz definitely proved that he has some talent.

This may be a tough situation for Cruz to be in though. The New York Giants have a pretty deep receiving core, with the likes of Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks and Sinorice Moss. Even with the injury of Domenik Hixon, this will be a challenge for Cruz to fight for time. Of course with more impressive play, there will be many teams in the hunt for Cruz. There are many teams that are on the rise but are a prominent wide receiver short. The Oakland Raiders have finally got a QB that they can maybe trust in but after the poor receiver play from rookies Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy, it may be time to explore some other options. The Tennessee Titans have a good, young receiver in Kenny Britt but it could never hurt to add another talent to play on the other side. Next we have the Chicago Bears, who really have no identity at wide receiver. They have tried moving speedy run back man Devin Hester to play the receiver position but it hasn’t worked out very well. With the gun slugging arm of Jay Cutler, Victor Cruz could potentially make a great target. Finally we can consider a team that is looking to win right now, the Washington Redskins. This offseason they have picked up Donovan McNabb to run their offense and have created a veteran backfield composed of Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. They do have some talent at wide receiver with Santana Moss and Joey Galloway but lets face it, Galloway is done. Cruz could play a big part in this offense and thrive similar to how DeSean Jackson did in Philadelphia.

Once again this is all speculation. We have only seen one game out of Cruz and that was just a preseason game against 2nd and 3rd stringers. This kid has some huge potential and will need to use the next few weeks to prove himself, but after what I saw from his first game, he is definitely cruzin’ somewhere big.

This is just an opinion…so please Pardon My Bias.
