2010 Week 2 NFL Preseason Picks & Odds

Handicappers PicksAug 18, 2010

Week 2 of the exhibition season has already started off intensely, at least for Minnesota Vikings’ NFL spread betting fans, with Brett Favre announcing his return to the purple and gold’s roster. Their game at San Francisco is just one of five we’ll be discussing in this week’s edition of preseason NFL free picks. *Note: All home teams are the favorites in this article:

New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons -2.5, Total: 37
Thursday, August 19th, 8:00 ET

The Patriots hit the road off a home win and cover as short chalk against the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints, while the Falcons got the job done for their betting backers vs. Kansas City, but looked hardly impressive in doing so. Tom Brady was efficient in his limited work, but what turned out to be most surprising was the amount of running the Patriots did overall; rushing 35 times to just 29 passes; certainly not the Pats method of attack we’ve gotten used to over the years. With the Falcons offense failing to gain more than 300 yards combined vs. the Chiefs and looking mighty rusty doing so, look for the defense to continue holding the fort down after keeping the Chiefs out of the end zone for the first 59:42 of last week’s game. NFL Free Pick: New England/Atlanta Under 37

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Cincinnati Bengals -3 (Ev), Total: 37
Friday, August 20th, 8:00 ET

The Bengals starting defense was embarrassed last week by Kyle Orton of the Denver Broncos, and now they have to go up against an Eagles attack that posted 285 yards through the air vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars. That said, the rush defense was outstanding, limiting Denver to just 36 yards overall on 15 carries. With Michael Vick the most experienced of the Eagles young field generals, I find it hard to believe these guys put numbers up that remotely come close to last week’s output. Kevin Kolb and company have to deal with a hungry, ball-hawking defense, and I look for it to propel Cincinnati to the home win and cover. NFL Free Pick: Cincinnati Bengals -3 (+100)

Dallas Cowboys vs. San Diego Chargers -3 (Ev), Total: 37
Saturday, August 21st, 9:00 ET

The Cowboys dished out a truly brutal effort for their NFL betting backers last week against Oakland. A 9-0 lead quickly turned into a 19-7 defeat. Still, the defense has locked it down thus far, shutting the Bengals and Raiders out for a combined 114+ minutes. With some key offensive players still holding out, the Chargers looked more than comfortable handing the ball off to Ryan Matthews and playing defense in their home win and cover against the Bears last week. Dallas has moved the ball with ease between the 20’s thus far, but their red zone offense has been horrendous. I look for that trend to continue as both stop units rule the night in this low-scoring tussle. NFL Free Pick: Dallas/San Diego Under 37

Minnesota Vikings vs. San Francisco 49ers -3, Total: 34.5
Sunday, August 22nd, 8:00 ET

NBC’s Sunday Night broadcast finds the Vikings and 49ers meeting up for the first time since Week 3 of last season when Brett Favre put his stamp in Vikings lore, connecting with Greg Lewis from 32 yards out with two seconds remaining to earn Minnesota the 27-24 home win. Though #4 is in the process of returning to the Vikings active roster, he more than likely won’t be suiting up for this battle. Instead, Sage Rosenfels will look to build off his 310-yard and three TD effort last week against the Rams. San Francisco earned a fluky win on the road at Indianapolis to move Head Coach Mike Singletary to 4-1 SU in the preseason. I expect both first team defenses to rule the roost while they’re in, but for all heck to break loose once the reserves come in, making NBC’s second Sunday Night telecast much more entertaining than the Hall of Fame Game proved to be. NFL Free Pick: Minnesota/San Francisco Over 34.5

Arizona Cardinals vs. Tennessee Titans -3.5, Total: 37
Monday, August 23rd, 8:00 ET

Both these clubs experienced a reversal of fortune last week, as the Titans lost 20-18 in Seattle as 3.5-point underdogs, while the Cardinals battled back from a 16-0 deficit in the 4th quarter against Houston to win 19-16. It was a reversal of fortune quite simply because Ken Whisenhunt has proven to be a horrendous preseason coach for football bettors (3-10, 4-9 ATS), while Titans Coach Jeff Fisher sports a 9-4 SU mark the L/3 exhibition seasons. I’m never a fan of laying more than a field goal in preseason action, but this looks to be a very ripe spot to do so. With the Cardinals invading Tennessee off an undeserved win paired with the fact that Tennessee prides itself on winning this time of year and enters its home opener off a rare loss, this has “woodshed beating” written all over it! NFL Free Pick: Tennessee Titans -3.5
