What If Stone Cold Stayed A Hollywood Blond, Would We Be Chanting WCW???
The Attitude era, one, if not the greatest periods in our industry. Fuelled be the Monday Night War, Vince Mcmahon and Eric Bischoff gave us the time of our lives and memories to last a lifetime. Top names dominated our screens such as Hulk Hogan, the Rock, Sting, Undertaker and more pure talent to fill a Million WrestleMania's. For 6 years we witnessed in awe as these two powerhouses threw lefts and rights at each other, desperate for that one knockout blow, that shot that would leave their opponent on the mat staring up at their towering figures. They attempted this with historic moves like DX, Hulk Hogan turning heel and the Ministry of Darkness. As we know years after War was declared Vince powerslamed Eric to the canvas for 1....2.....3!
But lets face it, there was only one reason why WWE overcame WCW's Ratings......Oh HELL YEAH. The Texas Rattlesanke, The toughest SOB in the World. Can you guess?
Stone Cold Steve Austin, I Believe, is the main reason Vince was left laughing. He gave us memories to last a lifetime, such as Taking out Tyson, his legendary Beer Truck antics and making his own boss wet himself. Not only did he do this he gave 5 Star Matches. HBK was left mesmerised, The Rock was Stunned (Literally), everyone he stepped into the ring with is gaurunteed to have nothing but praise towards him. Not only this, but Vince must have made a WrestleMania like amount of money over the years of him, with one word......Merchandise. With slogans like "Hell Yeah" and "3:16" and " Thats the Bottom Line....Cause Stone Cold Said So" printed on everything from hats to T-Shirts- to life size puchable inflatables. His one name was and still is recognised as the sole reason WWE still has life in it to deliver finshers left right and centre.
However, and its a big one, Stone Cold wasn't always giving stunners and Middle fingers to MacMahon and every Grappler on the Roster. Like every other Superstar, there comes history before the stardom.
Like almost every fan that packs wrestling events knows, this Icon wasn't always the Toughest SOB. He was a little Rookie desperate for a breakout. He was once Eric Bischoffs guy. Wrestling Matches against the likes of Jim Duggan, Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat over at WCW. He also one a few titles including the United States Title and WCW Tag Titles with Brian Pillman, The Hollywood Blondes.
But after a few years later Austin got Injured in Japan and was put on the sidelines for a while. So with no hesitation, WCW President Fired as the Rock put it, his Redneck Candy Ass! The devious Bischoff didn't see any point in having Austin, he didnt see him as a Marketable Wrestler, HA. After that and a brief spell at ECW. The RattleSanke fell into grasp of Vince.
But what i want to know is What If Steve Austin remained a WCW Star? What If he continued to Smash likes of Hulk and Bret. If Eric Bischoff didn't fire Austin, gave him time to recover, and unleashed him as the Beer Guzzling Maniac that graces the Hall of Fame. Would WCW have gained even more ratings. Would WWE's drop rapidly. We know for a fact Vince's merchandise sales would atleat be cut in two. As would his ratings.
I Believe truthfully that WCW would have layed the Smckdown on WWE and strolled to pinning them and claiming the Monday Night War Championship. For all we know, WWE might be out of Business! With low ratings and Merchandise sales, I believe Eric would be Showing Vince the Middle Finger and Stunning him out of the Wrestling Scene!
