WWE SummerSlam 2010, Results/Review
The biggest party of the summer has come and gone. But did SummerSlam live up to the hype? Come to think of it, there didn’t seem to be a lot of build up for this years edition. Maybe that is because of the Nexus storyline being pretty much the focus of the entire show. Either way, on with the results.
Dolph Ziggler vs Kofi Kingston…Winner…No Contest.
What started out as a perfectly good match for the Intercontinental Championship, got ruined by yet another beatdown by The Nexus. Thats right, three quarters of the way through a very good match, the good squad shows up and ruins it all. This was totally not necessary, and it spoiled what was turning out to be one of the highlight matches of the night, with two very good young stars.

Melina vs Alicia Fox…Winner, and new Divas Champion….Melina.
As much as I don’t care about the Divas Title, it was great to see Melina back in action, since she is one of the few women left in the company that really knows what she is doing in the ring. Thankfully this one was short and sweet, with Melina scoring the win with her newest finisher, which looks like a better version of The Miz’s skull crushing finale. Of course after the match team Laycool had to come out and spoil the fun by attacking Melina. Now on the plus side, I am hoping this means that Melina will end up in a match with these two Beautiful People rip off’s, so that we can unify those belts at Night Of Champions.
Big Show vs The Straight Edge Society…Winner…The Big Show.
This turned out to be for the most part, a throw away match. Something they put on so that you can hit the bathroom or the concession stand before one of the main events comes on. It had everything you would expect from a match like this. The big giant squashing his opponents early, then they get the upper hand and beat him down ( 3 on 1 rules and all) Then The Big Show mounts a comeback. C.M. Punk runs away, and Show choke slams Joseph Mercury onto Luke Gallows for the funny pin. Everybody done now? Good, lets move on to a real match.
Sheamus vs Randy Orton…Winner…Randy Orton, by DQ
With each match, Sheamus is proving that he belongs in the main event. He is a natural at being a Heel, and plays the part to perfection. His reactions are great, as he is very good at not only making himself look good while delivering a beating, but making his opponent look good when taking one. And in this match with Randy Orton, he was definitely going to be in for a beating. Its no secret that I am not a big fan of Ortons, but even I couldn’t complain this time. For once the slow pace that Orton likes to use, was perfect for these two to work out a good give and take match. But unfortunately, what was shaping up to be a classic match, got ruined by a lousy ending. Sheamus brings a chair into the ring, and ends up flinging the ref to the ground as he tries to take it away from him, and winds up getting disqualified. This is the worst sort of ending to an otherwise great match, but I would guess that it means that these two will meet again.
Kane vs Rey Mysterio…Winner…Kane.
This was another one of those matches where almost everybody knew exactly how it would play out, and it did. Kane and Mysterio are no strangers to each other, as they have feuded in the past. And in a World Title match, we saw Mysterio pull out all the stops, in what would ultimately be a losing effort. But that wasn’t the real story. What everybody was waiting for, was the return of The Undertaker. Before the match, Kane had wheeled his red coffin to ringside, and now with Mysterio defeated, he was dragging him over to stuff him in it. And then of course the moment that surprised nobody, The Undertaker appeared in the coffin. But Taker was weak, as he had been in a coma for a few months, so after telling Mysterio that he believed him, in not having anything to do with what happened, he attempted to chokeslam Kane. The Big Red Monster fought out of it, and delivered a Tombstone to his brother. So now we finally have confirmation of what we expected all along. It was Kane that attacked his brother, and now we have another feud between the two.
Team WWE vs The Nexus….Winners…Team WWE…..well, just John Cena actually.
Without going into too much detail, I will try to sum up the finer points of this match. As details would take way too long, being a 7 on 7 match. And that brings us to the big surprise of the night. Throughout the show, The Miz was being coy about whether or not he would join the team, with various members trying to convince him too. As it turns out, he eventually said yes. But as he was about to make his way down the ramp to join the team, John Cena stopped him short, and announced that the team couldn’t wait for him to make up his mind, and found their own seventh man. And that man was…….Daniel Bryan !! Yes, the former Nexus member who was released right after their initial attack on Cena, has returned.
The match itself was fairly good, with the WWE team getting an early lead, only to see it evened up. The match went back and forth, but after the elimination of Edge and Jericho, they attacked Cena, which left Bryan and Cena (who is now injured) to face Heath Slater, Wade Barrett, and Justin Gabriel. Bryan holds his own for a while, and eliminates Slater. Then The Miz returns and blasts Bryan in the back of the head with his briefcase, which leads to him getting eliminated. Now it is John Cena in a 2 on 1 scenario. But this is Super Cena. Of course he defies the odds and wins the match.
Overall, it wasn’t a bad Pay Per View, but for a SummerSlam, it was just okay. I would say….B -
