NFL Fantasy Football Top Picks: AFC East Fantasy Football Preview June

JohnnyNFLAug 15, 2010

Okay, first weekend of preseason football is behind us. I’m releasing my Fantasy Football top picks and preview for the AFC East.

Now this was as of June 2010, so you will need to do due diligence to evaluate injuries and such.

I’ve kept these close to my heart, as I didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag before my first draft this weekend. Take a look and feel free to build your own rankings from this.

Buffalo Bills

RB Fred Jackson

As of right now Jackson still has to be considered the top pick on the Bills and a valuable fantasy starter. He could lose playing time to a healthy Marshawn Lynch and rookie C.J. Spiller, but until further notice he is still the starter. Considering the Bills' passing game is less than average, Jackson should see a lot of touches, even in a depleted role. Right now Jackson looks like he could be a second round pick in your fantasy draft.

WR Lee Evans

Evans is again their No. 1 WR with the departure of Terrell Owens, but that doesn’t mean he should be considered a high draft pick. The Bills still have problems at QB, and the offensive line needs improvement as well. Expect the Bills to run the ball a lot, and while Evans will likely still be their leading WR, don’t expect much consistency. I wouldn’t consider Evans anything better than a third WR on your fantasy squad.

RB (R) C.J. Spiller

Tough to tell at this point how valuable Spiller will be this season, but he could become a nice late round draft pick. He should get some kind of playing time, but just how much will depend on how the Bills plan to use Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. Spiller should see at least some kind of playing time initially, but at this point he is nothing more than a player to have on your bench and see what develops.

WR (R) Marcus Easley

Easley has a chance to become a starting WR, but with the problems the Bills have had at QB, his value is still very questionable. Easley could be worth a late round pick if you need a WR as a bye week replacement.

QB (R) Levi Brown

With Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick as the competition for the starting QB job, it’s not out of the question that Brown could win the job. In the event Brown does win the starting job, he still won’t be worth taking a risk on unless the QB pool in your draft wears very thin. Look at Brown as a possible late round pick with the potential to be a bye week fill-in if he becomes the starter.

Miami Dolphins

WR Brandon Marshall

Marshall has proven he can be a valuable fantasy WR and should prove to be one again in 2010. The Dolphins' offensive line is better, and with either Chad Pennington or Chad Henne at QB, Marshall should excel. Marshall should be considered a first or second round fantasy pick and a valuable No. 1 WR.

RB Ricky Williams

Despite Ronnie Brown coming back from injury, Williams may be too valuable not to retain the starting job. Williams can catch the ball as well as run it and has a nose for the end zone. Williams should be a first or second round fantasy pick and could be a valuable No. 1 or No. 2 RB.

WR Davone Bess

With Brandon Marshall now on the other side and a good running game, Bess should continue to improve. Bess can be a nice mid to late round draft pick that should put up good enough numbers to be a decent No. 3 or possibly even a No. 2 fantasy WR.

RB Ronnie Brown

Even in the event Ricky Williams starts, Brown will still see enough playing time to be a decent flex player. Brown will likely play in the Wildcat formation and will also likely split time with Williams on a regular basis as well. Brown could present some value as a late round draft pick.

QB Chad Pennington

While Chad Henne may be the starter coming into camp, if Pennington is healthy he will be tough to keep on the bench. While Henne is improving, he still has a way to go before reaching the skill level of Pennington. With the addition of WR Brandon Marshall and an improved offensive line, Pennington could prove to be a nice late round pick as your backup QB.

WR Brian Hartline

Hartline should be the third WR this season, and with an offense that has improved he could put up some decent fantasy numbers. Hartline may be worth a late round pick that can provide value as a third WR or a bye week replacement.

WR Greg Camarillo

Since Camarillo will likely only be the fourth WR or split time with Hartline as the 3rd WR, he likely won’t present much value, but he could be a decent bye week pickup if the matchup is right.

New England Patriots

WR Randy Moss

While Moss has been known to dog it at times, he is still one of the premier WRs in the league. Having Tom Brady at QB doesn’t hurt either, so there’s no reason to think Moss won’t again be one of the top fantasy WRs in the league. Moss will likely be a first or second round pick in most leagues and will be a very good choice as your No. 1 WR.

WR Wes Welker

Coming off an ACL injury isn’t easy, but Welker’s injury was not as bad as originally thought, and he should be ready for the start of the season. This catapults Welker into at least a nice third or fourth round draft pick and valuable second WR as a fantasy player. In PPR leagues consider Welker a No. 1 WR.

QB Tom Brady

Brady will again be one of the top five QBs in the league and can be a good starter for your fantasy team. The Pats generally like to throw the ball more than run it, and with the talent Brady has on the offense, he should put up some good numbers again this season.

RB Kevin Faulk

Faulk can be a nice late round draft pick to add some depth to your RB position. Faulk is an underrated player who does it all and can be a nice bye week replacement when needed, especially in PPR leagues.

RB Sammy Morris

Morris can also hold some value late, but he needs to stay healthy. With Laurence Maroney not being one of Bill Belichick’s favorite players, Morris will get more playing time if he can stay injury free. I wouldn’t count on Morris as one of my starters, but he could provide value late as a bye week replacement.

New York Jets

WR Santonio Holmes

Holmes would be a good No. 2 or decent No. 1 WR for your fantasy squad, but he shouldn’t be drafted too high because of his four-game suspension to start the season. He should be the leading receiver for the Jets in 2010, but just how he will fit in with your team during the first four games is something to think about. If he is still available in the late rounds, he could be a nice pickup that should help your team for the remainder of the season.

RB Shonn Greene

While many fantasy football “experts” will likely have Greene rated among one of the top RBs in the league due to the departure of Thomas Jones and the Jets having the best offensive line in football, I still think he is a risky first or second round pick.

First of all, LaDainian Tomlinson is still going to get some carries. Second of all, rookie Joe McKnight will probably see the field a little bit as well. Third of all, carrying the load for your team is a lot different than filling in for the starting RB. While I still think Greene will be a valuable second RB or flex player, I am still not ready to pull the trigger on him as my No. 1 starting RB.

TE Dustin Keller

Keller may not be among the elite at his position yet, but he can still provide value as your starting TE. Look for Keller late in your draft if you need a TE, but don’t expect outstanding numbers on a consistent basis.

WR Jerricho Cotchery

Cotchery will have more value while Holmes is suspended, but even after he comes back Cotchery should provide some value as a second or third WR for your fantasy team. Cotchery has been their go-to guy for a couple of years now and should remain a favorite target of Mark Sanchez.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson

Tomlinson may not be nearly as valuable as he once was, but he still may be good enough to be a decent flex player. LT should get some receptions and also see some goal-line carries and could be a nice pickup as a late round draft choice.

QB Mark Sanchez

While the receiving corps is much improved, Sanchez is still young and would be a risk as a fantasy starter. The way the Jets run the ball is also a deterrent to his fantasy value, so I would consider Sanchez nothing more than a late round pickup as a bye week replacement QB.

WR Braylon Edwards

Edwards should have more value over the first four games since Holmes will be out, and he could step into your team's third WR or flex role during that time. Even after Holmes comes back Edwards should still have some good games but likely won’t perform that way consistently. Edwards can be a nice late round pick who can provide depth at the WR position even after Holmes comes back.
