The Immediate Futre Of The Viper: BLEAK!

Randy RileyAug 16, 2010

As almost the entire IWC and WWE Universe predicted, Randy Orton did indeed come up short of winning the WWE Championship at SummerSlam 2010. The match will count in the record books as a victory, bringing his 2010 PPV record to 2 wins, 5 defeats, and 1 draw. A win might be a win for some, but not bringing home the gold is another story completely.

So, the question now becomes, where does WWE's apex predator go from here? The anonymous GM stated that Orton needed to win or he would find himself in the back of the line for a title opportunity. Common sense would say that he will be given another match due to the way the bout at SummerSlam concluded. I will look at what the future could hold for him if it does indeed go down that way:

- A rematch with Sheamus at WWE Night Of Champions on September 19th. Since the WWE failed to due to the job of elevating Sheamus by giving him a clean win over Orton, he could lose at NOC, finally removing himself from the title picture.

- He could also win the match, seeing as how challengers usually go over in a rematch that is set up because the champion was able to wiggle his way out of the previous match. If he does win, he could begin his seventh championship reign. This is quite a stretch though, considering it would make sense for The Miz to cash in his money in the bank contract immediately after and take the strap off of Orton. If The Miz drops his United States championship to Daniel Bryan at Night Of Champions, I could almost guarantee he succeeds in cashing in the contract later in the evening. This would of course lead to a rematch between Orton and Miz at WWE Hell In A Cell. I won't even bother going that far into the future but if it does come to pass, expect The Miz to keep the belt and continue holding it for a while.

- The other end of the spectrum has the anonymous GM NOT giving Orton a rematch at WWE Night Of Champions. If this is the case, I could only see Orton being somehow injected into the WWE/Nexus angle depending on where the bookers are going with it considering how SummerSlam ended.

At the end of the day, as can be seen, regardless of the scenario, the next two months seem rather bleak for The Viper. Whether or not he is able to hold on to his status as a very much over face on Monday nights remains to be seen. It will be quite difficult though for the WWE Universe to continue cheering and taking him seriously with things looking this bleak.
