NFL: An Ode to the Preseason

Benjamin HoganAug 3, 2008

Preseason, preseason,

We've waited half a year,

Forย your meaningless games

And unvetted no-names

Remind us the playoffs are near.

Glorious preseason,

We know these games don't count,

But spring and summer through

We always long for you

To cease our football drought.

Tonight, this night, preseason,

Is the evening you'll begin.

A Sunday night game

At the Hall of Fame,

We just can't help but grin.

To finally hear the pads smack together.

To hear John Madden yell, "Boom!"

To see a long pass,

And the field of painted grass

Releases us from our gloom.

Theย stars willย face justย one quarter.

Others won't evenย play.

But the mere apparition

Of intense competition

Makes us live for another day.

We need you, preseason.

We'reย sick of baseball.

We don't care about bunts.

We want to see punts

In theย cold chills of Fall.

Those glory days of September

Are so near,

Yet so far away.

That's why we cherish the preseason

And savor every play.

So rejoice, my fellow sports fans,

Because joy is finally here.

The NFL has arrived.

We're no longer deprived.

Feel free to shed a tear. (Really, it's okay. Let your emotions go.)

Preseason, preseason,

We've waited half a year,

Forย your meaningless games

And unvetted no-names

Remind us the playoffs are near.
