WWE SummerSlam Live Blog: Full Results, Recap, Review
WWE SummerSlam emanates tonight from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. This Live Blog will serve as the nerve center for a live recap and instant analysis of all the action for what has become one of the most highly anticipated pay-per-views of the year.
Melina will return to action, after being out for months with a torn ACL, as she attempts to regain the WWE Divas Championship when she takes current champion Alicia Fox. Melina defeated Fox just six days ago on RAW and hopes to replicate an impressive welcome back performance.

Fresh Backstage WWE Rumors 👊

Modern-Day Dream Matches 💭

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Kane will defend his World Championship against Rey Mysterio. For months, Kane has been seeking the mystery assailant who put his brother, The Undertaker, in a "vegetative state", and the most recent plot twist saw challenger Rey Mysterio accuse Kane of committing the act in question.
Sheamus will defend his WWE Championship against #1 contender in a match where outside interference will be banned. Despite being a two time WWE Champion in his young career, some still doubt whether or not Sheamus can hold his own against the elite talent on the WWE roster with no controversy attached. This match will be Sheamus' opportunity to do just that.
The Straight Edge Society (CM Punk, Joey Mercury, Luke Gallows) will take on the Big Show in a three on one handicap match. The SES has gotten the better of the Big Show as of late, injuring "The Giant's" hand just two weeks ago on Smackdown. The Big Show is responsible for unmasking both CM Punk (who wore a make to cover his involuntary shaved head), and Joey Mercury who had been the masked member of the Straight Edge Society. Both mask removals occurred on free TV with no build.
Our main event will see team Cena (John Cena, Chris Jericho, Edge, Bret Hart, R-Truth, and John Morrison) battle Team Nexus (Wade Barrett, David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Skip Sheffield, Darren Young, and Michael Tarver). The Nexus has threatened a hostile takeover with multiple attacks on WWE Superstars and employees. Team Nexus has operated as a well oiled machine since attacking John Cena on an episode of RAW just a few months ago.
Meanwhile, Team WWE has been shaky, to say the least, with clashes of egos leading to the temporary departure of members Edge and Chris Jericho. The Great Khali was attacked by team Nexus on the last episode of RAW, leaving a spot open for a mystery teammate. The Miz has teased his involvement in the match as part of team WWE, but we will have to wait and see to find out whether or not this will come to fruition.
And before we get started, here are my picks from my SummerSlam Primer posted earlier this week:
Alicia Fox (c) over Melina
Kofi Kingston over Dolph Ziggler (c)
The Big Show over the Straight Edge Society
Kane (c) over Rey Mysterio
Sheamus (c) over Randy Orton
Team Nexus over Team Cena

A video package airs highlighting the events that have occurred since the formation of the Nexus stable.
We've got plenty of time left in this show, so this match should be a nice, long battle.
Following the video package, The Nexus is introduced first to a chorus of boos. How much time is saved by having these guys come out together?

For those of you in the "Cena is turning heel tonight" camp, there's no way that's happening with the debut of new Cena gear.

Jericho hits a bulldog followed by an Asai Moonsault. Jericho trips up as he attempts the Walls of Jericho, but locks the maneuver on and David Otunga taps out.

"Y2J" chants fil the Staples Center as team WWE regains a 4 to 3 lead. Heath Slater comes in, and Jericho attempts misses and inadvertently hits Cena with a forearm attempt.
Slater hits his finisher on Jericho for the three count.
Chris Jericho has been eliminated.
Edge and Cena begin arguing. As Cena cools off, Edge spears Cena off the apron. Slater rolls up Edge for the three count.
Edge has been eliminated.
Team WWE is falling apart as Cena slowly recovers from the spear. Edge and Jericho yell at John Cena as Jericho shouts "you're a stupid man!" before Edge and Jericho leave together. It is 3 on 2 at this point as Michael Cole brilliantly interjects with sentiments of "I told you so!"

Cena hits the five knuckle shuffle and prepares for the Attitude Adjustment. Gabriel tags Barrett as Cena has him on his Shoulders and Barrett gains the quick advantage.
While working Cena over in the corner, Barrett tags in Gabriel. The two alternate tags and stomps in the corner as the crowd gets behind Cena (sans the obligatory 'Cena Sucks' section).

After a very thorough video package, Rey Mysterio, who appears as if he's escaped from the San Quentin Prison, comes out.
Rey Mysterio looks like miniature yield sign.
The brightness of Mysterio's orange attire could give his young fans epileptic seizures.
Michael Cole, being the instigator he is, begins questioning whether or not Rey really did attack the Undertaker.

The crowd comes unglued as the Undertaker enters the ring and stares at both Kane and Rey Mysterio.
The Undertaker approaches Mysterio and asks Mysterio "Why'd you do it, Rey?"
Rey swears he did not do it. Taker says he believes Rey, grabs him by the throat, and helps him up in the corner.
Kane is smiling as it seems The Undertaker will attack Rey Mysterio. The Undertaker performs his signature taunt, but turns his attention to Kane.
The Undertaker points at Kane (YOOUUUU!!) and grabs him by the throat. Kane grabs Taker by the throat. Kane removes the Undertaker's hand and hits a tombstone. Kane performs his signature taunt as fire blasts out of the ring posts and his music plays.
As expected, Kane was the attacker. Many Monday morning wrestling purists will be outraged at the predictable payoff, but they can all go to hell (pun intended). This was a well done angle with a logical payoff and little to no holes.
6:03 p.m.
After a video package hyping the WWE Championship match, Sheamus, the WWE Champion, is introduced.
Sheamus might want to call himself the Big Green Machine as he is decked out in Lucky Charms Green ring attire.
After a John Cena-like pause, Randy Orton is introduced.
The announcers run down the main storylines in play. King says he doesn't think either opponent is afraid of the other which makes this such a great matchup. Cole says Sheamus criticized Orton for being a third generation star and not working for anything he's gotten, but Cole says he disagrees saying that Orton has come a long way on his path to being a top superstar.
We are reminded of the stipulation that there will be no interference or a suspension will be handed down.

Sheamus continues his attack on Orton to the outside. Sheamus throws Orton into the barricade twice, then throws him back into the ring.

Orton performs his signature Christ pose while on the outside. It appears as if he was thinking about standing on the table to do this, but the table appeared to be in bad condition and may have broken under Orton's weight. That would have lead to yet another Randy Orton temper tantrum and nobody wants that.
Winner: Randy Orton by Disqualification
Sheamus is being helped to his feet as the fans chant "WE WANT MIZ!"
Instead, they get a promo for John Cena's next movie as we get set for the next match.

Enter the Miz in his gear with the Money in the Bank Briefcase.

He says John Cena and Bret Hart asked if he should join the WWE. What we didn't see is that Cena came up to Miz and admitted he's been wrong about what he's been saying about the Miz.
"John Cena got down on his knees and begged me to join team WWE!"
"John Cena literally said that I am the only superstar that can see him! Bret Hart, a WWE Hall of Famer said that I was the real Excellence of Execution!"
"Chris Jericho gave me his band CD, and I graciously accepted it, then threw it in the trash!"
Miz calls Morrison Marty Jannety and says he is Shawn Michaels but only better. He says Edge gave him an unlimited supply of Slim Jims, and R-Truth wrote him a crappy rap.
The Miz says the WWE Universe now needs to realize that he is the WWE's fastest rising star and he is the WWE's only hope.
He says he is the future, he is the United States Champion, the future WWE champion, and these people need to realize that.
So what's it gonna be, Miz?
"This decision is bigger than LeBron James' spectacle on ESPN which will ultimately lead to the Lakers losing to the NBA Championship."
The Miz is getting great heat at this point.
"The Question is: Am I going to join team WWE? The answer is........"
"..."
"Yes!"
Michael Cole is excited about that.
The Miz says he will lead team WWE to victory and the WWE Universe will not be talking about the Nexus nor looking up to their hero John Cena.
They will be saying what Miz has been saying all along. Miz insists that fans wait to be called upon to do his catch phrase with him. Otherwise, he wants absolute silence.
"Because I'm the Miz, and I'm AWESOME!"
Fantastic promo. Fantastic. Cole is literally marking out.
5:49 p.m.

Sheamus asks if he can borrow Kane's casket and Kane says "No!"
Sheamus insists that he is the new Big Red Machine. Kane tells Sheamus he has guts, but his guts will be spilled all over the floor if he ever talks to him like that again.
Sheamus leaves.
5:36 p.m.
We are shown clips of The Big Show's unmasking of CM Punk and Joey Mercury followed by the subsequent attack by the SES that injured Show's hand.
The SES is introduced as CM Punk is sporting an "I Broke the Big Show's hand" t-shirt. Somewhere, Greg Valentine is smiling. Or eating.
The Big Show is introduced next with his right hand heavily bandaged.
CM Punk has a crazy new Chest tattoo. I don't know if this has always been there underneath the gorilla like hair on his chest.
Matt Striker chimes in with his latest alliteration: The Sin-free soldier! (CM Punk).
Mercury charges Big Show and is chopped in the face for his troubles. Luke Gallows is chopped by the Big Show.
This is a "tornado rules" tag match as all three members of the SES surround the Big Show.

Laycool helps us count the amount of champions in the ring.
Laycool tries to take a picture with Melina, but Melina attacks them.
I thought Melina liked photo ops.
Laycool gains the advantage as Alicia Fox joins in and is attacked by Laycool for her troubles. They look to be setting up for a spot but their music plays prematurely.
Michelle McCool connects with a knee to the face of Melina against the announce table anyway.
5:23 p.m.
Alicia Fox is introduced followed by Melina. Melina looks like Hulk Hogan and Big Bird had an Indian lovechild.
Alicia grounds Melina with a headlock but Melina comes back with some forearms. Melina corners Alicia and stands on the champion only to release before the five count.
Alicia Fox charges Melina and Melina connects with a modified falling backdrop.
Melina is teasing a leg injury of some sort. Don't know if this is legit or not because the referee has stopped the match temporarily. Melina performs her matrix move to avoid a clothesline but it looks shaky.
Alicia Fox goes back on the offensive as she slaps on a hammerlock. The crowd gets behind Melina as Melina connects with a series of forearms and is cutoff by a knee by Alicia Fox.
Alicia Fox misses a clothesline in the corner and Melina counters with a rollup attempt.
Melina may be legit injured as Alicia is not capitalizing on this injury by working over her knee.
Fox finds herself on the bottom rope as Melina hits a double knee drop on Alicia Fox. Melina hits a modified face buster and pins Alicia Fox for the three count.
Winner: Melina
5:19 p.m.

Edge echoes Jericho's sentiments. Miz says he doesn't know if he wants to be concerned with the Nexus and he'll think about joining team WWE.

Kingston misses the Trouble in Paradise and Ziggler counters with a sleeper hold.
Enter the Nexus.
The Nexus quickly disposes of Ziggler and are now surrounding the more popular Kofie Kingston.
The Nexus engage in their patented "pack of wolves" attack on Kofi Kingston. Darren Young hits his finisher, followed by Wade Barret's finisher. Justin Gabriel is standing out like a sore thumb with his purple attire.
Barrett cuts a promo and receives immense heat.
"WWE is searching for a 7th member but it isn't going to make a difference to the end result tonight. We are talking about a roster that is so divided, and so fragmented that they wouldn't be able to get together to sign a birthday card let alone form a cohesive unit fighting us.
"The Nexus are the most destructive force in the history of the WWE and there is a good reason for that. it is because they are united by a common purpose and they just want to let the WWE and the rest of the world know that you're either Nexus or you're against us."
Great, simple, promo to build towards the main event. Not too excited about the finish for the Intercontinental title match, however.
5:04 p.m.
We open with the Intercontinental title match between Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston. Dolph is introduced first, accompanied by Vickie Guerrero, looking more like Billy Gunn than ever.
"EXCUSE ME!"
Vickie Guerrero attempts to get the attention of the crowd but is cut off by Kofi Kingston's music. We're two for two in the "new gear for SummerSlam" department as Kofi is sporting red and black attire as opposed to his rather subtle tribute to Hulk Hogan attire.
5:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time)
The opening package features shots of the City of Los Angeles. The narrator tells us that "Change is a powerful force" as highlights relevant to the main event matches on the card are shown. Nexus/WWE, Kane/Rey, and Sheamus/Rey highlights are shown and the package ends with the narrator asking "what if they (Nexus) succeed?" There's really a Bash at the Beach, 1996 feel to this event as the seventh mystery man for team WWE will likely be revealed tonight.
Kane is next, carrying a casket as Cole says that the casket is "symbolic" of this match.
Then why not make it a casket match?
