Liverpool vs. Arsenal: Was Joe Cole's Red Card Justified?

Maxx GAug 15, 2010

The game began peacefully on Super Sunday. Liverpool vs Arsenal was set to create some promising predictions for the rest of the season.

Till the half time, the teams went in to a draw 0-0. However, the referee Martin Atkinson booked Jack Wilshere from Arsenal for a challenge on Liverpool's Javier Mascherano in the 41' minute.

It was the 45th minute. The game was just about to enter half time and the two teams would have returned normally to the dressing rooms. But the drama never ceases to end here.

Liverpool's Joe Cole made a challenge on the Arsenal centre half Laurent Koscielny near the throw line. Koscielny was down with pain holding his leg, Bacary Sagna went on shouting and Referee showed the Red Card to Joe Cole.

Many of you will say that this red card was absolutely rubbish and never necessary, the referee could have shown Cole a yellow card as a warning. Many of you will argue that yes, the Red card was the most apt act that could have happened, it was straight and true and fair.

Let us take you back to the season 2009-10. Stoke City vs. Arsenal. Stoke's Ryan Shawcross ended Aaron Ramsey's play as he tackled down the latter and landed him with a broken foot.

Arsenal may be still suffering the after effects of this horrorible injury in their midfield.

So, to say, that a slide tackle with enough cynicism and unnecessary aggression can not only be fatal to ending a player's career but it can lead the victim's team to suffer the long term after effects of it.

Arsenal are having problems already in their back and again after this injury, if Koscielny did break his foot and that would have lead Wenger's defense to grave danger. They could have suffered long time and big time.

However, that was not the case. We see Koscielny back after the break.

Is it appearing that I am saying in favor of the Gunners? No. I am talking from the view of a soccer fan.

Give it a second, give a thought, do you really have the right to tackle to end someone's career? If the answer is no or still a yes, whatever, then a red card and a match ban for 1-2 weeks is pretty small in comparison to your offense.

Now whether the card offense was so severe or not, it is your call.

Moments ago, Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny sees a red card from the referee following a handball! He was sent off on the 90th minute.

Atkinson's red card showing has just elevated through years, he has grown bold and confident. Or is becoming too much? The answer will be yours.
