NFL Preseason Intriguing Story Lines Revealed When Lions Play Steelers

James BrownAug 14, 2010

The Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Detroit Lions in the preseason openers for both teams. The game may be interesting but it’s the story lines that will have me tuned in on Saturday night.

Betting the Game: The latest line released by the Top Ten Sportsbooks has the Steelers listed as three point favorites in tonight’s contest. Brobury Sports is the place to wager on the NFL preseason. Mention the NFL preseason promo code: Regaw and get $70 free when depositing $200.

Lions showcasing their Best: The Lions look to hit the Steelers with their best shot on Saturday; Jahvid Best. Best has impressed coaches and teammates during training camp in more ways than one. He can run the ball, but has looked inspiring in the way that he is receiving and blocking. With Kevin Smith unlikely to play in Pittsburgh as he recovers from the knee surgery that ended his 2009 season, Best is expected to get some playing time with Detroit’s first-string offense.

Quarterback Quandary: Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, has been very quiet regarding the quarterback play tonight. Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich have been splitting the time with the offenses in the preseason. The Steelers want to make sure that they get enough time with Roethlisberger, but since he is going to be suspended for the first four to six games. They also need to clarify their signal caller situation.

Young players on display: The one thing that Mike Tomlin did say about this game is that he expects his starters to just be in the game for 8-12 snaps. That leaves plenty of room for his younger players to make an impact. The teams top draft pick, Maurkice Pouncey will get some time to show his skills. On defense, Thaddeus Gibson will try to show his impressive play at camp is the real thing.

First Look at Ndamukong Suh: Suh was asked by SI.com if he was excited for tonight’s preseason game against the Steelers. “Definitely excited,” Suh said. “I don’t really consider it an exhibition game. Everybody’s playing hard, everybody’s fighting for a spot, so it’s my first opportunity to go against somebody else other than my teammates and prove what I can do for this defense.” It will be interesting to see how Suh has adjusted to the pro game. The defensive line should be tough to match up against since the Lions acquired Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams to line up alongside Suh.

This game has so many story lines it has become must see TV for the avid football fan.
