Cleveland Browns vs. Green Bay Packers: Does Colt McCoy Shine?

Brian DiTullioAug 14, 2010

Cleveland Browns fans have a lot to look forward to in tonight's first preseason matchup.

The Browns and head Coach Eric Mangini will debut their new offense with new quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace.

Mangini also will be giving Browns fans a reason to watch the second half when Colt McCoy will take the field for the first time.

This first preseason game will be a good test for McCoy as he'll be facing Green Bay's backups. The reason this is a good test is this will give McCoy a good "live fire" drill without the pressure of having to face nothing but seasoned NFL veterans.

If McCoy can succeed against the third team players, and there's no reason to think he won't succeed, it will be a great confidence booster going forward. It also will have the side effect of creating a lot more hype, but that's not a bad thing either.

Obviously the first few series will be the most important, as the first teams square off, but watching how Delhomme and Wallace operate in the offense will be what Browns fans should be keying in on.

Interceptions are not something anyone wants to see, but they can show who needs to work on what timing where, got that?

On the defensive front, the new-look secondary will get its first chance to impress or depress Browns fans.

Once again, it's only the first preseason game, and you don't want to read too much into it, but if the secondary is getting torched and embarrassed, it has to be analyzed every which way possible as to why so it can be fixed before Week One.

Back to McCoy, it will be fun to watch the rookie out of Texas handle his first live NFL snaps, and the entertainment value hopefully will be kicked up by a brilliant play or three leading to a touchdown.

Success in the preseason doesn't mean a whole lot, but it's nothing to sniff at, either.

Showing the coaches and fans you can win is a crucial step in building a winning attitude that can carry over into the regular season.

McCoy should be helped by a lively running game featuring lots of running backs looking for jobs. Expect Chris Jennings and James Davis to get the bulk of the handoffs from McCoy.

The first preseason game is almost upon us, so relax, pop a tasty beverage open and enjoy some Cleveland Browns football.
