Wake Up: 6 Sleeper TEs in 2010
2009 was the year of the TE. Offensive coordinators have found ways to get these big, athletic receivers involved heavily in the passing game.
We look at 6 TEs that could make a big impact in 2010.
Zach Miller TE, Raiders: Miller has averaged around 60 catches, 800 yards, and 2 TD's a season over the last two years, and that was with Jamarcus Russell at quarterback. Those are pretty big numbers for a guy who was catching passes from the biggest bust in draft history. In steps Jason Campbell, who not only is a huge upgrade over Russell, but also has had success with his tight ends previously. Look for Miller to increase both his receptions and touchdowns, while approaching 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career. John Carlson TE, Seahawks: Carlson has been a red zone machine scoring 12 TDs over the last two seasons, while only catching 50-55 passes a year. The third year tight end has been consistent, even when his quarterback play has been inconsistent. Look for Carlson to improve on his numbers a year ago, and out produce tight ends being drafted ahead of him. He is currently the 14th tight end being drafted, right around the 13th round. Considering Kellen Winslow is being drafted 4 rounds ahead of him, I would consider Carlson a steal. Heath Miller TE, Steelers: Heath Miller set career highs in both yardage and receptions in 2009, while becoming a more integral part of the Steelers offense. Head Coach Mike Tomlin and OC Bruce Arians have also made it known that in 2010, Miller is going to become even more a part of their offense. If he can approach 80 catches again, his late 13th round ADP would make him an absolute steal. Miller is getting no pre-season love, and he could be a tight end to sit back and wait for. Deep Sleepers Zach Miller (Jax): A converted QB, the other Zach Miller has exceptional athletic ability as shown by his week 17 performance: 8 catches, 69 yards, and 2 TDs. Shawn Nelson: Nelson is another big, athletic TE, but he is more of a project. Remember how Chan Gailey used Tony Gonzalez in 2008? Nelson could fit into the role as the Bills lack playmakers in the passing game. Jared Cook: He runs a 4.4, and only has Bo Scaife standing in his way. His work ethic came into question during his rookie season, as well as a lingering ankle injury, but if can get inserted into the starting lineup, watch out.
