It's Time For Gio Gonzalez To Be Promoted

Steven ResnickAug 2, 2008

Dana Eveland has worn out his welcome in the big leagues. It's easy too tell that teams have an approach to how to hit him or get him into trouble. His problem all year long has been his ability to throw strikes. I get the fact that he was part of the trade for Haren and he did start out the year doing a decent job. He wasn't great, but he wasn't horrible, he was steady.

The wheels have fallen off for him he does have a 7-7 record with a 3.88 ERA but that's going to change after today it will be 7-8 with an era somewhere around 4.25 he gave up 5 runs before recording a single out agains the Red Sox. I think the only reason why he is still even in the rotation is that he didn't give up many homeruns but he's given up 2 already again the Red Sox and over his past 5 starts he's given up 5 of the 8 homeruns he's allowed this year. Teams have adjusted to him and he hasn't made any kind of adjustments except to keep on being his wild self.

It is time for the A's to bring in Gio Gonzalez because Eveland is still young and he could gain some confidence by going to Triple A and working on things. I think it's going to hurt him a lot if he continues with the way he's going. He's going to lose all his confidence and continue to get rocked. I do understand another part of his downturn has been the lack of offense by the A's, but they did give him 2 runs in the first inning so he had a lead to work with before surrending the 5 hits in a row before striking out JD Drew, but then he walked Jed Lowrie.

The A's already have put Dallas Braden into the rotation. Why not put Gio Gonzalez sure his numbers at 8-7 aren't the best but he has the ability to strike people out his ERA is rather high, but I'm sure pitching in Oakland will help that especially with the huge foul territory the Coliseum has. Would it hurt for the A's to bring him up now? I don't think it would I think it would be great for him, but maybe the A's are just saving him till September when the rosters expand. I don't know or the other reason maybe they want him for next year so he can be in the running for Rookie Of The Year.

If the A's aren't going to call Gonzalez up then who replaces Eveland because it's obvious he needs to work on something down in Triple A. Then we should bring up Dan Meyer he was the key component in the trade for Tim Hudson. Why not see what he can do until the A's deem Gio Gonzalez as ready to start in the Majors?
