Who's the Best Trainer Between Freddie Roach and Roger Mayweather?

Troy SparksAug 12, 2010

Any boxing trainer would love to train the world's two best boxers who are keeping millions of their fans waiting.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, hit the jackpot early in his training career with Virgil Hill, James Toney, Oscar De La Hoya, and even actor-turned-boxer-turned-actor-again, Mickey Rourke.

Roger Mayweather, to date, trained his nephew, Floyd Jr.

If Roger Mayweather is training another boxer, I need to know.

Both trainers went in different directions in their boxing career.

Roach's career lasted all of maybe 4-5 years.

In his short career, Roach was in two title fights.

His biggest payday as a professional was $7,500.

It appeared that Eddie Futch either didn't put Roach in a position to succeed, or he really sucked.

It is unfortunate that Roach got hit too many times in the head, which in part attributed to Parkinson's Disease, which he suffers from now.

I guess Futch returned the favor by giving the training reins and his stable of fighters over to Roach.

Roger Mayweather was a great amateur boxer, sporting a 64-4 record.  He was 59-13 as a professional with 35 knockouts and fighting at lightweight, super lightweight, and welterweight.

That's why the "Black Mamba" is the best trainer for Floyd Jr.

I can't say the same thing for Roach.

If an up-and-coming boxer wants to train under Roach, think again.

He trained or is training almost 30 fighters.

I put this observation to my boxing fans: How did De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Michael Moorer, and others lose under this guy?

I can also say this: Roger Mayweather helped Floyd get championships.

Floyd Sr. trained his son briefly as a professional after his release from prison.

If you can understand why Floyd Sr. was disappointed and distant for almost 10 years after his son fired him for Roger Mayweather, then you get the idea that Floyd Jr's uncle is the best man for the job.

To Floyd Jr's credit, he made up with his father and takes advice from him.

That's why Floyd Sr. calls himself the best trainer, not this time or that time, but all time.

When the superfight happens, you will find out for yourself who the best trainer is.
