Baghdatis Enjoys a Renaissance
Since bursting on the scene in 2006, it’s been a quiet few years for Marcos Baghdatis. Fours years ago the man from Cyprus reached the final of the Australian Open and then made the semi finals at Wimbledon. In the four years since then, Baghdatis has only reached the quarter final stage of a grand slam once, at Wimbledon the following year in 2007. His form dropped dramatically and along with injury, Baghdatis suffered tough couple of years.
Tennis Betting pundits note how, this time last year, Baghdatis was ranked well outside the top 100 but the Cypriot has enjoyed something of a renaissance in the past year and has risen to number 25 in the world. However before he entered the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles he had suffered a fairly miserable couple of months, not winning a match since the French Open.
He looked short of confidence at the start of the match against American Ryan Sweeting in round two but fought back through to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and reach the third round for the first time at this event. Baghdatis is set to take on Illya Marchenko for a spot in the quarterfinals, as the 25 year old prepares for his first US Open since 2007.
After missing two US Opens in a row, Baghdatis will be eager to prove his place back amongst the world’s best players. His record at Flushing Meadows is far from great however.
In his four appearances so far, those who plan to bet on us open tennis match outcomes will look at the fact that Baghdatis has gone out at the first round twice and the second round twice. The plucky Cypriot will be out to improve that record later this month.
