Finding Their Name: The Story of 2010's Browns Rookies

Aug 11, 2010

For years upon years the Cleveland Browns have picked at or near the top of the NFL draft.ย This sickening practice has been dubbed โ€œOur Super Bowlโ€ by several local media members.ย Throughout the course of this sick practice becoming the norm and acceptable, Iโ€™ve tried to find ways to make it fun having a bad football team.ย Hence forth, finding really cool nicknames for Cleveland Browns rookies.ย In years past thereโ€™s been โ€œThe Mightyโ€ Brady Quinn, playing off of the Manfred Mann song โ€œThe Mighty Quinn.โ€ย There was Courtney โ€œQuiet Stormโ€ Brown who was later amended to the โ€œSlight Drizzle.โ€ย โ€œBig Moneyโ€ Gerard Warren, who was also dubbed โ€œThe Ladies Manโ€ by WKNRโ€™s Kenny Roda.ย Last seasonโ€™s class included Alex โ€œDaddyโ€ Mack, Brian โ€œSlobiskieโ€ย Robiskieย for his slow moving frame, andย my personal favorite James โ€œBoom Goes the Dynamiteโ€ Davis.ย Of course none of these players haveย led to a Super Bowl victory yet, but there are hopes that those on the activeย roster, Mack,ย Robiskie, andย Davis will help us achieveย the real โ€œSeason of Dreams.โ€

Having said that, here are the official Jeff Schwartz nicknames of your 2010 Cleveland Browns rookiesโ€ฆ.

Roundย 1: CB Joeย Haden, Florida: This was a tough one.ย Iโ€™m going with โ€œMr.โ€ Joeย Hadenย because his name sounds so distinguished you just haveย to throw a Mr. in front of it.ย Of all the rooks, this is the one I want to succeed the most.

Round 2: S T.J. Ward, Oregon: This was the easiest one.ย With the craze of World Wide Wes during the whole LeBron James hostage fiasco, and the style of play employed by T.J. Ward, Iโ€™ve dubbed him โ€œWild, Wild Ward.โ€ย Heโ€™s a killer, andย he might just be the best safety to ever come from theย Pac-10 if he stays within himself andย can stay healthy.

Roundย 2: RBย Montarioย Hardesty, Tennessee: Often compared to Jamal Lewis, his mentor at โ€œRocky Top University,โ€ย Hardestyย is a violent runner.Gus Johnson of CBS once described Lewis as running like he had bad intentions.ย In a word, or two, thatโ€™s the name to go withย Montarioย โ€œBad Intentionsโ€ย Hardesty.ย Heโ€™s a monster in the wings, once he gets healthy.

Roundย 3: QB Colt McCoy, Texas: Heโ€™s a straight shooting, gun slinging inspiration according to former teammate Jordanย Shipley, so Iโ€™m going with โ€œThe Realโ€ Colt McCoy.ย I know of two people both named Colt and theyโ€™re both highly successful and great down to earth people.ย So letโ€™s hope to add a third to that group.

Roundย 3: OT Shawnย Lauvao, Arizona State: I honestly had never heard of this man when the Browns made him the 92ndย overall selection in the 2010 NFL draft.ย Iโ€™ve You Tubed him and checked out some film.ย Heโ€™s a man child.ย With only a small archiveย of footage to see, I went with the generic name of Shawn โ€œMonsterโ€ย Lauvao.ย He just looks like a monster on the field, I see him as a staple of the Browns Offensive Line for the next ten seasons.

Round 5: SS Larry Asante, Nebraska: Larryโ€™s last name is perfect for a football player.ย He plays like his nickname too.ย Heโ€™s a head hunter.ย Heโ€™s a killer.ย Heโ€™s got no remorse for what he does on the field.ย Larry Asante is going to be glossed, โ€œAssassin.โ€ย Heโ€™s also going to be a fixture in the Cleveland Browns secondary for years to come.

Roundย 6:ย WRย Carlton Mitchell, South Florida: Heโ€™s got freak like speed andย huge hands.ย Carlton Mitchell may have a first name dedicated to the nerd on that Will Smith show, but heโ€™s a lot more like the Fresh Prince on the field.ย Heโ€™s a quick thinker, and moves around to avoid trouble.ย For the rest of his time in C-Town, Carlton Mitchell is going to be โ€œThe Smooth Prince.โ€

Roundย 6: DE Cliftonย Geathers, South Carolina: 6โ€™7, 299lbs thatโ€™s a big, big boy.ย I had never seen highlight one of Cliftonย Geathersย until yesterday.Heโ€™s so strong, that I have a hard time believing heโ€™s only 299lbs.ย His arms are long, and heโ€™s got speed.ย I hope this guy can develop into something because he looks like he could be very fun to watch.ย Clifton โ€œGet To Itโ€ย Geathersย is going to be a ball hawk if he can get used to his size andย the player opposite of him.ย Hopefully thereโ€™s a plethora of sacks in his future with us yelling โ€œGet To It!โ€

Over the course of the next few weeks, theyโ€™ll be more season related previews.ย Iโ€™m a firm believer in where this team is headed.ย Good times are ahead for those of us who havenโ€™t abandoned the fine city of Cleveland.
