Will the Newly-Signed New York Ranger Affect Team Play?

Nick PerriAug 11, 2010

One minute into the start of Free Agency (July 1st) Glen Sather announced that he signed free agent goaltender, Martin Biron. The Biron signing was indeed a win for the Rangers, as the contract signed was two years worth about $900,000. A big need last season for the Rangers, especially late in the season, was a good back-up goalie. The Rangers did not have a very good back-up goaltender last season, which caused Henrik Lundqvist to play seventy-three games last season. Perhaps that was a reason the Rangers were not invited to intend the play-offs last season?

What does Biron bring to the Rangers?

Well, one thing he brings is a legit back-up goaltender. John Tortorella did not trust any of his back-up goalies to play in the late season games last season, and that was the reason Lundqvist played an unbelievable amount of games. Now the Rangers have a great goaltender to play behind Lundqvist, and (God Forbid) Henrik gets injured, Biron would be a great goaltender to take the starting spot for a few games.

Biron, at age 32, brings a veteran presence to the locker room. He also brings experience which Henrik lundqvist can learn from. Biron will be a huge help this season, and he is definitely a huge upgrade from what the Rangers had last season.

Just when it looked like the Rangers first day of free agency was over, Glen Sather announced that he officially signed bruiser, Derek Boogaard. What I like about this signing, is the fact that the Rangers have a young, fearless enforcer, who will definitely watch out for players like Gaborik and Lundqvist. What do I dislike; the contract isn’t the best contract to give an enforcer. But that’s what Sather does every season, sign one bad contract (last season Donald Brashear).

What does Derek Boogaard bring to this team?

One thing for sure is toughness. Having possibly, and probably, the most feared player in the NHL is definitely a plus. As I said before, Boogaard will definitely scare players, like Dan Carcillo, away from superstars Marian Gaborik and Henrik Lundqvist. Boogaard has the biggest body in the NHL, and he will fight anybody. If you like attending games in which many fights occur, I would say going to a Rangers V Flyers game would be the right game for you. It’s likely that a fight between Boogaard and Carcillo occurs, and it’s even more likely that Boogaard and Shelley drop the gloves once or twice.

Derek Boogaard isn’t going to score more than about ten points a season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him score a total of two points this season. He hasn’t scored a goal in four seasons, and has a total of two goals in his whole career. Boogaard was signed for toughness, not scoring. But I think you know that already.
