By looking at the table, you can see players who we are high on and players who we think will disappoint fantasy owners this season.
QB Sleeper
Paul’s choice of Matt Cassel is interesting. His reasoning is that with Charlie Weis calling the plays in Kansas City and some added offensive weapons in Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster, the offense will be better. Paul also adds that with the maturing of Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe, and the reemergence of Chris Chambers in the receiving corps, it will give Cassel the needed weapons to be productive.
QB Bust
The writers all agree that Donovan McNabb is the clear-cut favorite to be a bust. The lack of a running game has us concerned, as well as the aging offensive line. It spells disaster in the Nation’s Capital.
Best Rookie QB Now
The clear-cut choice is Sam Bradford of the St. Louis Rams as he will be thrust into the starting lineup immediately. He ends up here by default.
Best Rookie QB Later
Rob’s pick of John Skelton is an interesting choice. Rob doesn’t have much confidence in Matt Leinart. Leinart will play this season, but if and when he struggles, the team will go with Derek Anderson and suffer through the season as Anderson isn’t much better.
Skelton is a long-term dynasty option, a kid with a rocket-sized arm and big body. All he needs is a little seasoning, and he will be very good.
MVP
Writers Bill and Sean have a lot of love for Aaron Rodgers this season. They spout his stats over the last two seasons and the fact that he is only 26 years old, and it makes me start wavering on my pick. Then they talk about what a complete team he has around him in terms of quality receivers and running backs, and I wonder if I made the right choice.
Comeback
Paul chose Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and he cites the third-year theory. Paul believes that in his third year in the league, Ryan will blossom. If another receiving threat emerges, and they get a more balanced offense, I think Paul could be right.
Too High
Writers Sean and Rob’s choice of Philip Rivers is due to the fact that Vincent Jackson will be missing three games and maybe more with his probable holdout. The other fear is that with rookie running back Ryan Mathews, the ground game could stall at the start of the season.
Too Low
The writers all went in different directions here and Paul thinks Jay Cutler will go for 4,600 yards in Mike Martz’s offense. He thinks Cutler is a safer option than the rest of the quarterbacks ranked ahead of him and is a high risk/high reward quarterback.
Never Heard Of
Rob’s pick of Matt Moore is surprising since he was blasting the signal-caller and saying Jimmy Clausen is a better option long-term. Is Rob already pulling out the smoke and mirrors for our fantasy draft? We think so.
Breakout
Three of the four writers are sold on Kevin Kolb and what he brings to the table. He has weapons galore surrounding him and the right coach in Andy Reid. Will the city of Philadelphia be patient for the growing pains he will undoubtedly go through? To be determined.
Stay tuned for Running Back Week. Starting Monday, we kick off our RB Drafting Philosophy, Ranks and Projections on Wednesday, and our Preseason RB Awards next Friday.
