Cap Casualties: New York Rangers Veterans Must Prove They Belong

Nick PerriAug 7, 2010

The New York Rangers are notably cap struck right now, and the only way they can get out of this situation is by getting rid of the wasteful players.

Veterans Wade Redden and Todd White may be targets for a buy-out, or to be waived to Hartford. Redden currently makes $6.5 million (as his cap hit), while newly acquired Todd White has a cap hit of $2.375 million.

As much as I would like to see Todd White in the NHL, it is starting to sound more and more like he will be sent down to Hartford after training camp.

As for Wade Redden, good luck to him! I really sincerely hope Wade Redden finds himself in Hartford after training camp. He has done nothing useful for the Rangers since he signed here, and he is just taking up a roster spot and cap space for the Rangers.

Getting rid of him would erase $6.5 million on the cap, and would open a spot on the team for another defenseman.

The fact is that the Rangers need to open up cap space if they want to do anything else this off-season, and the main players that are on the waiver radar (as I said before) are Wade Redden and Todd White.

Both are veteran players, and both have a big cap hit. No, $2.375 million may not seem like much, but it can do a lot of good if it is erased from the cap.

White is coming off of surgery this off-season, and he believes that he should be able to play in the NHL this season. He will have to prove that in training camp.

As for Wade Redden, he is coming off yet another horrific season. The way I see it, the only way he makes the team this season is if he has a completely mind blowing training camp.

Obviously, I don’t think that is going to happen. Chances are, Wade Redden will not be a Ranger in 2010-11. Whether he is waived or bought out, I don’t think Wade Redden will be a Ranger this season. But just in case, cross your fingers!

To sum up the article:

The Rangers are going to move someone to Hartford sometime before this coming season so that they can open up space for other players.

If Todd White and Wade Redden would like to have a spot in the NHL, and on the Rangers this coming season, they are going to have to prove to Glen Sather, Mark Messier, and John Tortorella that they are capable of playing at the NHL level.

If they do not, they will find themselves in Hartford next season.
