Cleveland Browns 2010 Training Camp: Observations From 8/6 (Video)
The Cleveland Browns practiced for the first time as if there was a game to by played the following day this afternoon of August 6.
Preparing for their annual Brown vs. White scrimmage at Cleveland Browns Stadium for Family Day, the teams were split equally into two separate teams.
Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Brad Seely is the "acting" head coach of the Brown team and Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan is the "acting" head coach for the White team.
Most of today's practice was designed around game planning for Saturday's scrimmage and the following were some of my observations, plus in the slide is a video montage of today's practice.
1. Brown Team: First Team Offense
1 of 11
The Brown team has the first team offensive unit which consists of:
QB - Jake Delhomme
RB - Jerome Harrison
FB - Lawrence Vickers
WRs - Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie
TE - Ben Watson
OL - Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Alex Mack, Floyd Womack, John St. Clair
2. Brown Team: First Team Defense
2 of 11
Here is the Brown team's first string defense (which is actually the second team defense):
DL - Titus Adams, Kwaku Danso, Clifton Geathers
ILBs - Eric Barton, Kaluka Maiava
OLBs - Davis Bowens, Jason Trusnik
CBs - Joe Haden, Brandon McDonald
S - Ray Ventrone, Nick Sorenson
3. White Team: First Team Offense
3 of 11
Here is the White team's first team offense (which is the second team offense):
QB - Seneca Wallace
RB - Chris Jennings
FB - Alex Smith (TE)
WRs - Josh Cribbs, Syndric Steptoe
TE - Evan Moore
OL - Scott Kooistra, Casey Bender, Billy Yates, Shawn Lauvao, Tony Pashos
4. White Team: First Team Defense
4 of 11
Here is the White team's first team defense:
DL - Robaire Smith, Ahtyba Rubin, Derreck Robinson
ILBs - D'Qwell Jackson, Chris Gocong
OLBs - Scott Fujita, Matt Roth
CBs - Eric Wright, Sheldon Brown
S - Abe Elam, T.J. Ward
5. Brown and White Returners
5 of 11
It should also be noted that the returners for both teams were as follows:
The White team had Josh Cribbs returning kicks and Steptoe returning punts.
The Brown team had Haden returning kicks and Chansi Stuckey returning punts.
6. Eric Wright Chats Up The Fans Before Practice Begins
6 of 11
Starting cornerback Eric Wright was very vocal prior to practice beginning.
He was chatting with a fan, who turned 25 today and wished him a happy birthday.
Also, that same fan asked Wright for an autograph on a photo the fan had of him, and even though the photo has Wright's old No. 24 in it (he is No. 21 this year), Wright said that old number is officially a throwback jersey now.
The crowd laughed.
7. Eric Wright In The Slot
7 of 11
Wright has been playing in the slot in nickel formations and today, on one play, he lined up across from Stuckey and locked down Stuckey to the point where he nearly got a pick off of the play, but instead he just batted the ball down.
Strange that Wright's coverage was so tight that Delhomme still throw the ball and tired to force it in there.
8. Two-Minute Drill
8 of 11
Kicker Phil Dawson was the hero in the two-minute drill nailing a 50-plus yard field goal which tied up the game simulation between the Brown and White.
The Brown team was down by three points and had two minutes to move the ball from approximately their own 35 yard line to get into field goal range, which they did and successfully tied up the simulation.
9. Haden in The Slot
9 of 11
On one play, Haden was in the slot covering Steptoe, and he had great coverage on the receiver to wear when the ball arrived he was able to bat it away for an incompletion.
It is good to see Haden making plays more and more and the days go one and he is looking like a great corner for the Browns' future.
10. Practice Ended Early
10 of 11
Head Coach Eric Mangini must have been very happy with what he saw from his team this afternoon because practice ended 30 minutes early at 3:00 P.M. EDT in stead of the normal 3:30 P.M. it was scheduled to end.
Another good sign that progress is being made with both the team and with Mangini as a coach too.
Next Camp Update
11 of 11My next camp update will not be until Monday August 9 at 1:30 P.M. EDT.
No updates over this weekend since I will be in Canton, OH covering the Hall of Fame induction and game for Bleacher Report.
