Baltimore Ravens Training Camp: Update on Gaither/Mason Injury and More

Old AccountAug 6, 2010

The health situation of lineman Jared Gaither continues to upset Raven fans everywhere.

Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reported that Gaither is out with back spasms once again.

John Harbough touched on the situation,  "He can’t get into his stance and really play right now," Harbaugh said. "So we have to work that out somehow."

It is coming into the question whether or not the loss of weight in the off season is having an affect on the injury.

Gaither has been mainly at RT this camp. For now, Oniel Cousins and rookie Ramon Harewood are receiving extra reps.

2. Update On Derrick Mason Injury

1 of 5

A sigh of relief for the Ravens when news came out that Derrick Mason did not suffer a serious leg/ankle injury a few days ago.

When Dan Kalko of MASN asked Derrick about the injury, Mason says he is near full strength and should be better off tomorrow.

Kalko via twitter: " Mason moving free and easy today. Appears completely recovered from sprained ankle. Ripped a pass away from F.Washington earlier. Derrick Mason said it felt good to get back out there. Said he'll be full strength probably by tomorrow".

Mason is one of the toughest players on this Ravens squad, and has respect of every man in the locker room for giving it his all these past few years.

Don't expect him to slow down until he earns his first Super Bowl ring.

3. Cornerback Walt Harris Cut Today by Ravens

2 of 5

Veteran corner back Wall Harris' stint with the Baltimore Ravens did not last long at all.

Coming off an ACL injury in 2009, Harris signed with the Ravens in late June, hoping to improve the secondary problems.

However, head coach John Harbough announced that the team would be releasing Harris, who has been dealing with an Achilles injury, and couldn't stay healthy.

"Walt was really disappointed that he wasn’t able to get healthy in practice,"  "That was the toughest thing. He feels like he’s close. He’s coming off the  injury from last season. When I talked to him this morning, his goal is to go back and really get with trainers and get himself right where he feel like he can play this year. But he knows that he’s not there right now."

4. Matt Birk Returning From Injury To First Team, Doing Well

3 of 5

A few of the Ravens veterans are returning from off season surgery, and today was Matt Birk.

Matt Birk came into camp and was ready to practice with first team right away.

Beat writer Dan Kalko was able to get some thoughts on Birk, and shared them with the world on twitter: " Matt Birk said he was happy to get out there and hit again. Took almost all 1st team reps today and said he'll definitely be sore".

Birk is one competitor the Ravens can never afford to lose. He anchors the offensive line, one that is on the rise of becoming great.

5. Willis Mcgahee Injurs Knee/ Dawan Landry Being More Aggressive

4 of 5

Here are just two other updates from camp:

Jamison Hensley reported Willis McGahee sustained swelling in his knee, which caused the Ravens to keep him out of Friday's practice,

McGahee said to reporters, “Because I’m old,” McGahee said when asked why he sat out. “I’m an old guy. I am old. This is my eighth year. No, I’m all right. I’m good.”

Hensley also noted that this is the first practice McGahee has missed since camp started.

Final Notes

Just want to let Raven fans know who are interesting in attending camp tomorrow.

It will be held at M&T Bank Stadium tomorrow ( one day only).

Next week, I will give my thoughts on the battle for the starting job at kicker between Cundiff and Graham.

Also, I credit Jamison Hensley and Dan Kalko for some of my quotations. Thank you for that.

Feel free to follow me on twitter for more NFL updates, especially on the Ravens, and hear what one NFL insider told me on the odds of the Ravens bringing back Frank Walker and or another veteran corner back.
