Texans Resign Rutgers Fullback Jack Corcoan
It Never seises to amaze me how many hard nosed football players can't even get into a camp in August. Every year I try to see were some of the NCAAs tough guys landed, only to find they didn't. I'm talking the kind of football players that all coaches say they want. I think the fact that I believe this game revolves around blocking & tackleing and I tend to look for these guys on Saturdays is the reason I am often disappointed. Looks like this one may have caught a break. It is the blocking Fullbacks and Tight Ends who are most likely to get lost on offense. Players like fullback Jack Corcoran from Rutgers. Corcoran is a textbook blocker who plays special teams. He is the kind of kid who you have to watch because he did not get the ball. Not because he's not skilled because he is. Because like the Fullback who preceded him, Brian Leonard, he is an unselfish player. He is a team first guy. With the draft capped at seven rounds, several talented football players go undrafted. Even though no team selects them in the draft, they’re able to sign with any team they choose as an undrafted free agent immediately following the draft (as long as there’s mutual interest). New Hampshire tight end Scott Sicko went undrafted but the Jaguars, Cowboys, and Jets all tried to sign him. Not getting drafted, [Sicko] decided, provided a new clarity, a different answer to the question of whether he wanted to get started on his life after football. "If I were to be drafted I would have had more confidence of a much longer career in the NFL," Sicko said. "I have to look at my life and decide what will make me the happiest. And the thing that will make me the happiest now and in the long run is to pursue my education." Sicko did what was best for him. Unlike Sicko, Corcoran has no choice. Football chooses him. Shortly after the April NFL draft, one of the nations top five fullbacks was picked up by the Texans. Jack impressed the Texan coaches but never saw camp. A month later he was out & teams like the Chiefs, who had interest, filled the need. So what happen in Houston? Interestedly enough, it wasn't anything Corcoran did or didn't do. The fact is, they had not yet even seen him hit. I know the game has changed but I like to think hitting is still the number one thing you want from your Fullback. Corcoran was in a good position to at least work onto the practice squad & take over for Vonte Leach next year. The problem was, the Texans needed to go with a guy who they believed could push Vonte Leach this year. A veteran like Justin Griffith. Giffiths injury yesterday was what Coraran needed. It's not how he wanted to get his break but it is the harsh reality of the NFL. Texan fans are in for a pleasant surprise. Jack Corcoran can & will push Vonte Leach. As a Rutgers fan I can tell you this kid is an NFL starter at fullback. I can also tell you that training camp is the break he needed. A furocious hitter and an abilaty to punish his body yet he seems to stay healthy. Like many NFL players, conditioning , flexabilaty & nutrition is like religion to him. This kid will turn some heads and it wont take long before Texan fans realise that not only will this kid make the team but he will , in my opinion, eventually start. I guess it's the old timer in me but I refuse to believe that football players like Corcoran have no place in the NFL. Every time I see a missed block that a good ten year old would have made. Every time I see a missed tackle by a guy who looks like he didn't want to make it in the first place. I'm sure Lombardi is rolling over in his grave. I refuse to believe that the game has changed that much. Yes it is more of a passing game. So it seems to me that protecting that passer is a good idea. Oh yeah, he can catch too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blXkZvJgerA
