Why women wrestlers aren't taken seriously in TNA and WWE

Gina GeatchesAug 5, 2010

As a kid, I grew up watching the likes of Lita, Trish Stratus, Molly Holly and Chyna.  These women seemed to have something unique and different about them. They could wrestler, not only each other, but could beat up the guys too! They were an inspiration and they were role models for young children.

However, fast-forward to today’s current division of women wrestlers in TNA and WWE, and the story is a far cry from what it once was.

One problem I have always had with the WWE and TNA is that they define their women wresters as, Diva’s (WWE) and Knockout’s (TNA) – why can’t they just be called women wrestlers? Why pick them out of the bunch and give them a separate name? I have always found these names sexist and degrading to women wrestlers.

WWE

WWE – as of late- is known for giving the women very little airtime and very short matches. Fans are lucky if we get a women’s match that last longer than three minutes these days! These shorts matches and lack of segments are causing the fans to shrug them off as time fillers. The fans can’t get behind them if they aren’t given the opportunity.

Another problem that WWE fails to realise - is that due to them hiring women wrestlers via agency models, rather than looking for talented women wrestlers in the Indy scene, this automatically sets up the fans to not care. Fans know that women hired via model agencies aren’t going to be as good as a woman who has trained to wrestle for years.

WWE seems to stick to the same women wrestlers every week, rather then giving deserving women the chance to wrestle and win the belt.

The company should realise the women that can’t wrestle and let them go. They really are bringing the reputation of the women’s division down and making it look like a joke.

TNA

Since 2010 TNA has lost some talented wrestlers and it’s taken a big blow to the women’s division. Without the likes of Awesome Kong, ODB, Roxxi and Alissa Flash it feels like there has been a void in the women’s division.  TNA needs to fill this void and scout for some new talent.

Like WWE, TNA seems to be focusing only on certain female’s wrestlers within their company. The company would greatly benefit from using other talent on their rooster such as Daffney, who is popular amongst the wrestling Internet community.

What do you think of the current women’s division in WWE and TNA?
