Brett Favre Strikes Again, Arrogance Abound

Jim SmallAug 4, 2010

Brett Favre has done it again.

He has managed, yet again, to wiggle his way to the front page of every sports section and the talk of the country. His apparent retirement swept through every major sports outlet like wildfire. Weepy montages littered ESPN as everyone remembered their favorite Favre moments.

And guess what? Like always, it was a waste because the 'ol gunslinga will be on the sidelines again next season.

This is getting out of control. I understand that his ankle is the real issue here, and he can't make the decision until he knows if he will be physically able to play, but his arrogance and lack of professionalism are getting out of hand.

He sent text messages late Monday saying he is close to or going to retire. The reports broke on Tuesday and everyone spent their day talking about Brett. Now, Wednesday, Ed Werder stalks him in a high school parking lot and finds out—OH WAIT—he has not made any decision. Surprise?

I'm going to give Brett the benefit of the doubt that he did not intend those text messages to reach anyone other than the people he sent it to. But the second he found out that the whole country had the wrong info, he should have called up his good old friend Peter King, or anyone at ESPN, and told them he has not made any decision.

But he didn't. And you know why? Because Brett is as arrogant an athlete as they come. LeBron James? He is a rookie in narcissism compared to Brett.

So we spent the entire day talking about Brett, watching Brett clips, speculating about Brett.

He loves this. It happens almost every year. He did it Green Bay, New York, and now again in Minnesota. But no one calls him on it. If you are waiting to see about your ankle—SAY IT. Don't let the world waste their time talking about you, just to pad your own ego.

Remember Tony Dungy's retirement. He said he was going to take a week to decide and he did just that. One week. That is how a professional handles it. Not stringing along the media and, most importantly, fans, as Favre often does.

Yet nothing changes. We will still wait, talk, and speculate. And Brett will still sit on the couch soaking up every moment.
