Fantasy Football: Beanie Wells A Three-Down Back? NFL Projections

Sometimes it takes a talented young running back a few seasons before his team gives him a full time starting job. This is looking to be the case for Beanie Wells as all signs point to Tim Hightower still having an active role in the running game.

With talk about Hightower possibly starting again this season, even a Wells fan like myself has had to tail back this young studs fantasy ranking this summer. While to do expect Hightower to be active, there are signs that he will again fade away as the season gets deeper.

All Around Talent

Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt has complimented Wells for his major improvement in pass blocking this off-season and even mentioned that the young runner's hands are underrated in the passing game. Wells didn't receive many opportunities to catch the football, but he made the most of those chances with an 8.9 yard per catch average on his twelve grabs.

For a fantasy back to be a clear top talent he usually needs to show his coaches, he's accountable as a runner, pass catcher and a blocker. Now, with solid production in all three areas, Wells is primed to put together a strong fantasy season overall.

2010 Fantasy Projection

Don't be surprised if Wells comes on slow early in the season because of Hightower's involvement. As we get to week six or so, fantasy owners should expect the Cardinals to start giving Wells more work as the second half of the year moves closer.

Hightower may slow down Wells productivity early but that will probably help the big man stay fresh for a strong finish in your fantasy playoffs. Thinking with the end in mind, Wells should strong when he faces the Broncos, Panthers and Cowboys weeks 14 through 16 during the fantasy playoffs.
