Brett Favre Retires Again: Yeah Right!
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported earlier this morning that Brett Favre has decided forgo a 20th NFL season. Nothing is official or confirmed as yet, but that's typical of the circus that is Brett Favre.
Haven't we heard this before?

The report goes on to state that Favre cited his ailing ankle failing to respond to treatment as he would have liked, as well as the general wear and tear on his 40 year old body as driving this decision.
The first time Favre "retired" at the end of the 2007 season, he stated nearly the exact same reasons. We all know how that turned out. What's to make us believe this time around will be any different?
Nothing.
Approximately a month after his first retirement speech, rumors began to surface that Favre wanted to return. Those rumors were fueled by the fact that he had not filed his official retirement paperwork with the league.
The same holds true today.
When interviewed later in the day, Vikings head coach Brad Childress said, "I'm not aware of any of those reports." However, he went on to say, "It wouldn't surprise me one way or the other." Gee Brad, thanks for nailing things down for us.
What else could we have expected to hear from Childress? He's trying to keep the media circus from affecting his training camp. Therefore, he's obligated to offer the same old company line.
I don't want to sound cynical, but this is getting really old. Is he coming back? Is he done for good? How's the ankle? Blah, blah, blah.
I think it is entirely possible that Favre saw all the attention Albert Haynesworth, Darrelle Revis, and some other players were getting and wanted to "stir the pot" a little to get his name back in the news.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune and Mr. Zulgad are very respectable and reliable, but I get the feeling their being taken for a ride on this one.
Ultimately, until he files his official retirement papers with the league office, I will refuse to believe any reports that suggest he's hanging them up, regardless of the respectability of the reporting agency.
Even then, I may not believe it.
I may wait until the Vikings take the field against the Saints on September 9th to see if Favre is still in fact in Mississippi.
