Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers...

Thank God that Brett Favre is telling Minnesota he's done and this conversation does not involve the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It could have. Lord, Favre was that close to Tampa Bay, that close to playing for Chucky Gruden, that close to making our town ground zero for the latest Brett Favre summer camp soap opera.

When His Favreness was ready to leave Green Bay in his rear view mirror, he was oh so close to signing with Tampa Bay. Surely a lot of Buccaneers fans prayed he'd end up here. Jon Gruden was so excited he was probably close to wetting his pants, back in the day of Gruden and Bruce Allen.

It could have been Tampa rolling its collective eyeballs. Yes, it could have been us.

Thank God it was not.

Once again, Brett Favre is holding Minnesota hostage. And it not a nice thing. Folks up in Minnesota are really good people. One or two visits there will tell you that. They're fun to be around, oh so friendly and oh so undeserving of Lord Favre's latest journey into "retirement."

Had he done this before April, Minnesota could have drafted appropriately and next April, probably should do exactly that. But now, all those nice Minnesotans are stuck with this rube from Mississippi, though he is a rube with a really good arm when it's working properly.

Yes, he could have been Tampa's problem, Gruden's problem. But Tampa never got him and Tampa decided that it didn't want to have a Gruden problem either and gave Chucky the heave-ho, right off the plank of the pirate ship.

So now he's big news, at least for today.

It could all change tomorrow.

And we've all seen that play before.

And by now, those nice Minnesotans have to be just a little tired of this all too familiar drama.

Yes, Brett Favre is theirs, not ours.

Thank God for unanswered prayers.
