Brett Favre Retires: Minnesota Vike-Queen Drama Over, QB Won't Play

John FarrierAug 3, 2010

When will this drama queen ever stop?

Have we finally heard the last?

Is that the sound of the “other shoe” dropping?

You know, the shoe that supports the foot below the ankle which is connected to the…

Enough already.

Enough is enough, plain and simple.

After all these years of torturing NFL fans with “whether he will” or “whether he will not” return, numerous media outlets have confirmed that Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre will not be playing during the 2010 season.

If you happen to be a Lions or Packers or Bears (Oh My!) fan (Sorry, couldn’t resist. I’m hoping to grow up by the time I’m 50, but the early returns don’t look very promising.), today you’re a pretty happy camper.

The grizzled veteran, part QB, part RoboCop it seems, has found a way to come back countless times, so why should this be any different?

Father time is clanging pots and pans in Favre’s ears, and he’s reaching like heck to plunge the snooze button.

Unfortunately, he can no longer reach it. This is a good thing.

It is good for Minnesota Vikings fans, and it is good for Green Bay Packers fans.

Time to heal ALL wounds.

Having been blessed with the opportunity to play college football in Wisconsin during the late-1980s, I learned the football culture which permeates all other cultures bleeds red on Saturday in Madison and bleeds green on Sunday in Green Bay.

The fine, upstanding, passionate, and wonderful fans of my team’s (the Detroit Lions) bitter rival, the Green Bay Packers, deserve the chance to distance themselves from Favre in purple, so they can once again embrace him in green on Lambeau Field on a fall Sunday not far into the distant future.

The fans of the Minnesota Vikings deserve to have a quarterback who is 100 percent committed to TEAM instead of 110 percent committed to ME.

The fans of the Minnesota Vikings deserve to have their front office devote their time and talents toward acquiring the next addition to the “NFC Arms Race," currently left to Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, Chicago QB Jay Cutler, and Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

The loss of Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings immediately places the NFC North up for grabs.  Favre truly was the difference maker.

I offer nothing but the best of wishes for Brett Favre and his wonderful wife and family, as they prepare to transition into the next of life’s adventures.

It sure has been one of the most wonderful and colorful books in all of sports history.

Time to close the book and place it accordingly.

Accordingly means many things for many people when you mention placing the history book of Brett Favre.

All I can offer is, “Be careful of the rough edges.”
