Five Fantasy Running Backs Due For A Drop Off

Mike RAug 3, 2010

Fantasy Football season is closing in fast. We have weekly live chats on who to draft, start, and sit on SportsFeens. Today’s tip is to avoid the obvious choice of drafting a player who will have a difficult time repeating their 2009 performances. The following players had 2009 seasons that were so dominant that there is little chance that they will reproduce the same numbers.

1. Chris Johnson RB Titans

Chris Johnson had a once in a lifetime season in 2009. He ran for over 2,000 yards and scored 14 TD’s.

Johnson had numerous long distance runs that provided fantasy owners with a big boost. He is coming off a season with over 400 touches and he is not a big back. He could easily be worn out and opposing teams will be prepared for him this season.

Johnson could run for 1,600 yards this season and fantasy owners would be disappointed. He is still a top 10 pick for your 2010 draft but avoid taking him number one.

2. Thomas Jones RB Chiefs

Jones had a phenomenal 2009 season in New York. He finished third in the league with over 1,400 yards rushing. Johnson will be 32 in two weeks and will be sharing carries with Jamaal Charles in KC. Expect a dramatic drop off in Jones' production for the current season.

3. Ricky Williams RB Dolphins

Ricky ran and ran all over opposing defense last season. He ran for over 1,100 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in the starter’s role last season. Williams is now 33 years old and the Dolphins should have a healthy Ronnie Brown on the roster.

4. Fred Jackson RB Bills

Fred Jackson was a surprise standout last year rewarding fantasy owners with a 1,000 yards season in part time duty. The Bills recently drafted C.J. Spiller from Clemson with their first round pick. Jackson will be relegated to backup duty again with the explosive Spiller taking the starting role.

5. Matt Forte RB Bears

Forte was the most disappointing player in fantasy football last year. He averaged 3.6 YPC and finished below 1,000 yards despite getting over 250 carries. This season Forte will be sharing carries with hard nosed running back Chester Taylor. Don’t expect a huge rebound season from Forte.
