Brett Favre To Retire (We Think)
Brett Favre is set to retire. No, really, he means it this time (I think). Several sources are confirming that the ageless one is already set on his decision for the 2010 NFL season.
Jay Glazer reported on the Dan Patrick Show this morning, saying that he thinks Favre is certainly done playing. He also gave us word that Brett has already informed the Vikings of his decision.
The question for Minnesota is this: where will this leave them in the NFC? With Favre, they are Super Bowl contenders, without Favre, are they even NFC North contenders?
Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels hope so, but neither has yet to demonstrate the full capability of taking an NFL team deep into the playoffs.
We are 11 days away from the Vikings pre-season opener on August 14th against the Rams, and exactly how will the fan base react to this information?
Until today, everyone knew that Favre wasn't "officially" back or "officially" out. If we looked back on his career, this summer led us to believe that he would be back for at least one more year.
He had surgery, something he hates, in order to be able to play, and he has been working out with high school players in Mississippi, just as he did before.
Will Vikings fans turn on him the way Cavs fans turned on Lebron, or the way Dolphins fans turned on Ricky years ago, when he seemed to quit just shy of training camp?
If Favre does retire, he will certainly be a first ballot hall of famer and a top ten all time quarterback.
But if he doesn't retire, or comes to the team after the start of the season, his legacy will be one of an annoying, aging, superstar diva who really feels that he is above the other players in the league, in terms of deciding when and where to play.
If he asks to come back, should Minnesota allow him? How will that translate to the quarterback they have starting in place of Favre? Remember, Vikings fans hated Brett for years and it won't be hard to get back to that exact feeling.
