What Is Next On Sathers Off-Season "To Do" List?
Early Monday morning the Rangers traded away two unneeded players (Brashear and Rissmiller) for veteran center Todd White. White will bring grit, scoring, and experience to the 2010-11 Rangers line-up. Two seasons ago White notched 22 goals and 71 points playing on the top-line with Ilya Kovalchuck. What if he plays alongside Gaborik or Frolov, or what about both? He could possibly put up those numbers again. Many Ranger fans do not understand the trade for White, and many are upset because it closes spots for rookies to play in next season. Honestly, I think it’s a good idea to load the roster this season which would give all of the top prospects time to play and gel with each other in Hartford. But if the plan is still to rebuild with prospects for this upcoming season, then the Rangers will have to make some moves to open up some spots. The only way they can do that is by trading away players, which would also open up cap space to resign Marc Staal. Players that can, and should, be traded are Michael Rozsival, Wade Redden, Brandon Dubinsky, and Matt Gilroy. Those players could open up space on the roster, and on the cap. I’ve heard that Glenn Sather is still looking around to do something, and has a lot of options to think about. Frolov may have been the last FA the Rangers sign this off-season, and I expect anything that happens from now to the beginning of training camp to be through trade. There are many more options for the Rangers through trade then there is through the Free Agent market, so it only makes sense that Sather takes the trade route (which quite frankly he is very good at). So what is up Sather’s sleeve for the rest of Free Agency? The Rangers could use a top-line center, and the only option in FA is Mike Comrie so a first line center would have to come through trade. I’m not going to go through whom the Rangers can trade for, check out my previous articles for that, but there are options out there. A newer option that just came up yesterday was young Tim Kennedy. Kennedy was waived by Buffalo Monday afternoon, and when it comes the Rangers time on the waiver list, I really hope they give him some consideration (to sign him). As for defense, the Rangers still have Marc Staal to resign. But if for some reason the Rangers are unable to sign him, there are many other options they can go with to get another defenseman. That is if they would like a defenseman. If not, they can always go through their system. There’s a prospect out there, his name is Ryan McDonagh, and yea that guy is ready for the NHL. If there are any spots open defensively McDonagh will most likely get the call to fill that spot. Would Sather trade for another defenseman like Robyn Regehr? Maybe he would, but he would probably have to give up Dubinsky and Gilroy which is A-ok with me, but maybe not to him. Other defensemen Sather can target are Kevin Bieksa and Tomas Kaberle. Again, that is if Sather wants a defenseman. As I said before Glenn Sather is excellent when it comes to making trades. Will he do anything else this off-season? I’m going to say, most likely. What will he do to improve the team? I do not know the answer to that question, so I will have to say: we will have to wait and see.
