Spurs Face Their Biggest Season

Sam RobertsAug 2, 2010

Spurs became the first team in five years to break the big four monopoly on the Champions League places last season but the big question is can they keep it going?
Harry Redknapp's men have a big season ahead and will be keen not to make the same mistakes as Everton did in 2005.

Back then the Toffees, who had nudged into fourth ahead of rivals Liverpool, crashed out of the Champions League at the qualifying round. With all of the previous season's hard work undone in 180 minutes, David Moyes' shattered players then crashed out of the UEFA Cup and tumbled to the bottom of the table. Only a post Christmas surge spared them a relegation battle.

Spurs will hope, of course, to go one better than Everton and make the lucrative group stages. But even if that is the case they will need to deal with the extra games. The online football betting suggests they could struggle to do this.

The Londoners often rested players in Europa League matches but with the prizes on offer so great Redknapp will no doubt play his strongest team in the Champions League.

But they must hope they can keep their form going in the league too.

They may enjoy their Champions League adventure but if they are to progress as a club it is vital they ensure it isn't a one-off.

A consistent run in Europe's premier competition will ensure the club's coffers remains full and they will be able to attract the world's best players.

A poor start to the league though and whatever they achieve will suddenly become irrelevant if they face mid-table obscurity or, worse, a relegation battle.

The Champions League betting makes Spurs outsiders for the tournament, so the club must not lose sight of its priorities.

Redknapp has invested heavily in the team but even his spending is dwarfed by Premier League rivals Man City.

The way they are spending means Champions League football is only a matter of time, meaning Spurs have to make the most of this opportunity as they may not get another one in the near future.
