Would it be crazy for the Rangers to trade for Robyn Regehr?

Nick PerriAug 1, 2010

The Flames are notably over the cap space by about $3million, which means they will have to make some moves to clear that mess up. One name that has popped up sense day 1 of Free Agency is Robyn Regehr. Does anyone recall the Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky trade rumors at the beginning of the summer? The one that had either of them sent to Calgary? Well the player that was supposed to come back to the Rangers in the deal was indeed Robyn Regehr. Regehr is a 30 year old hard-hitting defenseman (believe me! Just check him out on YouTube), who could be a great addition to any team in need of a crease clearing defenseman. The Rangers do happen to be a team in need of a “crease-clearer”, bearing the fact that King Henrik gets absolutely no support from any d-man in front of the net. With six defensemen under NHL contracts (MDZ, Eminger, Girardi, Rozsival, Redden, and Gilroy), they are also trying to sign Staal, and those negotiations don’t look like they’re going anywhere fast. So why not attempt to trade for Regehr? By trading for Regehr it would definitely be the end to Wade Redden. Yes, I do understand that acquiring Regehr may also be the end to Marc Staal as a Ranger, but if negotiations continue to go nowhere then there is no reason to wait for them to start going somewhere. What I mean is, instead of waiting for Staal to budge, go after another fairly young defenseman who has proven talent. The Rangers could use another good defenseman, and Robyn Regehr is out there as an option. What would the Rangers have to give up? Probably a center (Brandon Dubinsky) a prospect (Any minor leaguer NOT named Grachev, Aasen, Weise, Byers, McDonagh, Pashnin, or Kundratek. Or the prospect could be someone like Matt Gilroy?) And a draft pick (3rd pick perhaps). A trade package of Dubinsky, Gilroy, and a 3rd rounder for Robyn Regehr wouldn’t be terrible. I wouldn’t mind that trade. What do you think? Should the Rangers try trading for Regehr? If you think the Rangers should trade for Robyn Regehr, leave a trade proposal as a comment, and I’ll get back to you. Thanks for the read, hope you enjoyed!
