Buffalo Bills Open Training Camp Minus Several Options

Dan Van WieJul 30, 2010

The Buffalo Bills training camp has opened up at St. John Fisher College. There were all sorts of major developments that were revealed at the first practice. Plus, some developments that occurred outside of the Bills training camp will surely have an effect on the team as well.

Many Bills fans were hoping that some sort of additional veteran presence could be added to the offensive line to provide experience and depth. However, the two highest regarded free agents have both signed with other teams this week. Guard Chester Pitts signed with Seattle on a one-year deal, and tackle Flozell Adams signed with Pittsburgh on a two-year deal.

So, that puts all the more pressure on the young rehab starters for the Bills—Eric Wood and Demetrius Bell. If either one goes down, you are eliminating the precious little depth that the Bills have with Jamon Meredith and Ed Wang.

Depth Chart Starters Revealed

First team quarterback was Trent Edwards, followed by Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm.

First team receivers were Lee Evans, Steve Johnson and Roscoe Parrish.

First team linebackers were Chris Kelsay, Reggie Torbor, Andra Davis and Kawika Mitchell. Paul Posluszny is sidelined due to a minor groin procedure and Aaron Maybin is running with the second team.

First team defensive secondary was Terrance McGee, Drayton Florence, Jairus Byrd and Donte Whitner. Leodis McKelvin would rotate in on nickel coverage plays.

Jamon Meredith is rotating at both tackles with Cornell Green and Demetrius Bell.

First Training Camp Injury

That distinction goes to Chris Kelsay who got his shoulder banged up and he will be limited during the near future.

The linebacker corps are starting to thin out already. Nic Harris was placed on the active/PUP list and Paul Posluszny is out for two weeks following his groin procedure. Now with the news on Kelsay, it would be a great uplift if Aaron Schobel came back to camp.

Aaron Schobel Update

The greatest and latest news on Aaron Schobel is that he is in the process of renting a home in Buffalo. That is a good clue to what his intentions are.

The Bills need him back, and it appears that Aaron wants to come back.

Depending on how quickly Aaron gets in to camp, he should have no problem being ready to play in the season opener.

The other question is how effective will he be in the new defensive scheme? That might take a little more time to sort out.

C.J. Spiller contract—hold out update

First-round draft picks are starting to sign left and right, and with each signing there will be a greater body of evidence as to what kind of dollars are appropriate for Spiller and his agents to be asking for.

To date, this is the run down of who has signed so far:

#4 Trent Williams—Washington tackle, #8  Rolando McClain —Oakland linebacker, #13 Brandon Graham—Philadelphia defensive end, #19 Sean Witherspoon—Atlanta linebacker, #20 Kareem Jackson—Houston cornerback, #23 Bryan Bulaga—Green Bay tackle, #24 Dez Bryant—Dallas wide receiver, #25 Tim Tebow—Denver QB, #28 Jared Odrick—Miami defensive lineman.

None of these players are running backs however, and until the running back selected after Spiller, Ryan Matthews of the San Diego Chargers, is signed, it will probably mean that C.J. is going to be absent until the financial window becomes clear.

That is it for now. There will be plenty of other developments to cover, but it is good to see the team together, hitting each other, and getting back to playing Bills football.
