Denver Broncos Are a Mile High With the Return of John Elway

Randy ChattertonJul 28, 2010

The Elway Factor

It was announced Thursday by NFL.com that John Elway is returning to the Denver Broncos this offseason in some type of building role.

Elway will start by attending training camp practices this offseason, and will help market the Broncos upcoming game in London.

Now I'm going to examine which role Elway could best benefit the Broncos in the long run.

General Manager (GM)

In my opinion, this could be one of the best roles for Elway to fill. Who knows what it takes to build a championship caliber team better than the two-time Super Bowl champion John Elway?

He also appeared in five Super Bowls, meaning he ran the AFC for a good part of his career. Elway has a great mind for meshing different personalities together (Shannon Sharpe, Bill Romanoski) and bringing in pieces to fit the always evolving NFL puzzle.  With our current general manager Brian Xanders having a roll in the departure of Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, and Tony Sheffler, maybe a change in command is the best resolution for the Broncos future.

Coaching Role

This probably has no chance of happening, but one can dream right? Who better to mold the young talent of a Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn than one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history?

There are not many people out there better fitted to show a player how to win when it counts then a guy that holds 34 comeback wins in his career. That record ties with Johnny Unitas for third all-time, and if he can bring even half of his undying will to win, these youngsters' futures will be gleaming.

Part Owner

Probably the most likely of the scenarios for numerous reasons. Elway already has ownership experience with the Arena Leagues Colorado Crush. Elway was quoted in the Denver Post stating at some point he would like to own a piece of the team.

“Would I like to be a part owner? Yes. I'd like for it to happen here.” Owner does not mean what it used to with the old school mentality of millionaires in luxury press boxes. Ownership is starting to transform into a place where past players can come back to the team they love, but be beneficial on and off the field. Just ask Michael Jordan who has been very hands on ever since he was GM of the Washington Wizards, and later owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. So Elway, feel free to lace those cleats and teach those youngsters a thing or two.

The truth is, whatever capacity Elway decides to return to the Broncos in, it will be very well received in the city, and in the NFL as a whole. So I guess there's just one thing left to say, welcome back John Elway.
