Stop the Speculation: Kyle Orton Is the 2010 Denver Broncos Quarterback

Reid BrooksJul 22, 2010

The guy successfully fought off football Jesus in order to retain his spot at the top of the depth chart.

However, even after Josh McDaniels named him the 2010 starter, people continued to speculate that Tim Tebow/Brady Quinn would take his job.

Folks, I am going to rewrite what I have already written once, just because I have gotten tired of the never ending claims that Orton will be supplanted.

Kyle Orton is the quarterback this year.

I spent thirty minutes on the phone with a multi-time Super Bowl winning defensive lineman who just happened to join the Denver Broncos from New England this off season. He told me that Kyle Orton had a great year last year and that he was the guy.

He repeated it for emphasis.

That guy, being the highly touted and highly respected Jarvis Green, wouldn't lie about that.

He would have no reason to. Neither would Josh McDaniels.

Fans have run into a serious problem—they believe that because Josh McDaniels reached up and grabbed Tim Tebow with the 24th pick that the kid doesn't need work.

Apparently, a lot of people are under the misconception that he can come in and immediately be a top-10 NFL quarterback (Kyle Orton was essentially that last year).

Virtually no one has ever been able to do that, and Tim Tebow admittedly has issues he needs to work on to be an NFL-caliber QB.

Kyle Orton is the guy. Tebow might see the field if Orton gets hurt, or if he is running creative formations, but Orton is the guy.

There is no longer a quarterback competition in Denver.

These statements are not meant to demean the potential of Tim Tebow, who might someday develop into a great NFL quarterback. They are, however, meant to at least throw a bucket of water on the house fire that has become Tim Tebow-watch 2010.

A lot of Broncos fans are primarily interested in winning games this season, rather than what charity event Tim Tebow is at today.

Rather than push for a complicated time-share or try to knock our illustrious veteran field general, now is the time to get behind Kyle Orton for the season.

The Denver Broncos locker room has.

We all remember what happened in 2006, when Jake Plummer was replaced by Jay Cutler after fan pressure.

The lack of support in Denver got into Plummer's head. The Broncos missed the postseason that year, despite having gone all the way to the AFC Championship game the year before.

That was the last time we made the playoffs.

So please, give Orton more than one year to be successful. He is the best player we have at the position right now, and after a four-year hiatus, Denver fans really would like a stab at having a January.

He did a really good job last year given the circumstances.

He played better than Jay Cutler.

He isn't a showman, but he is the starter. And if you think that Brady Quinn or Tim Tebow would be much more explosive/exciting in the pocket, now would be the time to go back and re-watch game film.
