Rangers Update: What to do with Marc Staal, and the Ranger defense?

Nick PerriJul 20, 2010

Yesterday the Rangers added yet another defensive prospect through trade, by the name of Matt McCue. McCue has spent his career in the AHL and ECHL, still waiting for an opportunity in the NHL. He is 22 years old, and may be NHL ready very soon. So with the addition of another defenseman the Rangers are in a good position to get rid of their unneeded defenseman (Rozsival and Redden). After acquiring Steve Eminger many fans, including myself, thought that it was the end to Redden or Rozsival in New York. Now with the addition of this young blue liner, it almost looks like a guarantee that one, or both, will be moved. With MDZ, Girardi, Eminger, Gilroy, and probably McDonagh already on the roster next season, that leaves one spot open for another d-man. Will it be Rozsival, or will it be Redden, or will it be Marc Staal the still unsigned defenseman? If I had to choose out of those 3 it would obviously be Marc Staal. As we all know there is, or at least was, a “chasm” in the negotiations with Staal. The Rangers are reportedly offering 4 years at $16million, but it is unsure whether Staal is looking for more money, or less years. Whatever the case may be, there is no way the Rangers are signing Staal, or any Free Agent unless they move Redden and/or Rozsival (I’d rather it be both). Now with Kovalchuck signing with the Devils, the talk has switched over to trading; something Sather seems fond about this off-season. With teams looking to empty cap space, or looking to deal away players, this may be Sathers opportunity to get rid of the players he doesn’t need (Redden and Rozsival). Redden will most likely be waived or bought out because no one, except the Oilers (supposedly), will take on his contract. But Rozsival could be traded. He has some value on the market, and put together with the right package, he may be able to bring us back something useful, while opening up space on defense to sign Marc Staal. If that happens, it will probably happen in the next week because trade talks are at a record high this off-season. Sather has already made a couple of helpful trades, and may have a few more up his sleeve. We will just have to wait and see. Thanks for the read, feel free to leave a comment below. Hope you enjoyed!
