The Tennessee Titans: Too Cheap To Win?

Ryan FryeJul 19, 2010

I don't often have articles that are basically rants but this has bugged me for years. As I have always followed the Tennessee Titans very close, it has always been apparent that they do not like to spend money. The latest example of this is Chris Johnson, whom they refuse to give a long term deal too, after rushing for over 2,000 yards.

They decide to raise his pay slightly and wait a year for a long term deal. We all know, it will become the same old story and Johnson will pack his bags in a year after holding out.

Keith Bulluck, in my opinion the most underrated player in the NFL for most of his career, is a free agent.

I understand he is injured, but couldn't they show some kind of loyalty to a key part of there defense since he was a rookie. Kyle Vanden Bosch, one of the NFL's elite pass rushers, is now a Detroit Lions, thanks to wanting to pocket every last penny of available salary cap cash. This leaves the defense inexperienced and perhaps (for the short term at least) devastated, yet the Titans still don't seem to care.

I get the Albert Haynesworth deal, he was way overpaid I cannot knock them for not paying him however, this is hardly the case. Antwan Odom, signed a deal with the Bengals two years ago, a player the Titans had fully developed, yet is gone in a second.

The first glimpse we saw of this was in 2006. We start with none other than the late, great Steve McNair. McNair was the Titans franchise quarterback for years, playing through numerous injuries to lead the Titans to a win.

Holding the third pick they draft Vince Young, which is fine. They also decide they don't want to pay McNair anymore, so they lock him out of the practice facility? What a classless move; treating your franchise quarterback like trash.

To make matters worse, they trade him to the longtime rival Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens had also just signed Derrick Mason and Samari Rolle, two former Titans. Mason, who is still the Ravens go-to-guy (now aside from Anquan Boldin) was let go because they thought he was finished.

Well, he's not, he is still a consistent target, something the Titans have been lacking ever since. Rolle, is aging but has shown he had some years left, as a good cornerback, yet again a big weakness.

Don't get me wrong, Bud Adams is a pioneer to the game of football, (AFL/NFL) but he has not been willing to do what it takes to put a winner on the field. Luckily for the Titans, great drafting has somewhat dug them out of a big hole.

The bottom line is, if they didn't force themselves to rebuild every other year, who knows how many Super Bowls they might have. Sorry Titans' fans, but your team is cheating you out of a lot because they are penny pinchers, in a multi-billion dollar company.
