Thierry Henry Targeted by Manchester United, Who've Given Up On Dimitar Berbatov

Jeff HarbertJul 29, 2008

Manchester United have put an end to their interest in signing Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham. Sir Alex Ferguson was keen on bringing the Bulgarian to Old Trafford, but his hefty price tag has forced Ferguson to look at other options.

Tottenham initially slapped a ยฃ25 million price tag on Berbatov, but recently claimed they will only sell him for a stifling ยฃ38 million!

United already had a ยฃ20 million bid turned down earlier this month and have been reported to the Premier League by Tottenham for publicly expressing their interest in Berbatov.

With Sahaโ€™s departure looking imminent, United will have three first team strikers in their squadโ€”if Frazier Campbell stays that is. Ferguson has been looking to bring in at least one other striker to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.

The latest reports have been linking Manchester United with a move for Barcelona striker Thierry Henry. The former Arsenal star only joined the Spanish giants a year ago and seems to be more than happy in Spain after bagging 19 goals in his first season.

But if Manchester United can meet Barcelonaโ€™s asking price of ยฃ15 million, it may be difficult for him to turn down the offer.

But how many of you can even picture the former Gunner in a Manchester United shirt? I honestly canโ€™t see it happening. Still, this is football, and anything can happen.

The 2003 and 2004 Golden Boot winner turns 31 next season and looks to be past his best so I doubt if Manchester United will really be willing to pay ยฃ15 million for his services.

Other options for Manchester United include Blackburnโ€™s Roque Santa Cruz and Lyonโ€™s Karim Benzema. Both players are proven strikers but would require a big offer to lure them away from their respective clubs.

I find it more realistic that Santa Cruz or Benzema would be in a United jersey next season rather than Henry. But United have been linked with a lot of strikers this summer and itโ€™s possible that Henry will be nothing more than just another name on that list.

Letโ€™s see, thereโ€™s also been David Villa, Luis Fabiano, Samuel Etoโ€™o, and the list only seems to grow as the weeks go by.

Is Henry just another transfer rumor the media has come up with? Or is Manchester United actually interested in signing him? And for ยฃ15 million?
