Brett Favre Retirement Watch: 10 Things to Count on Seeing Every Season

Jon StarJul 16, 2010

While the Super Bowl champion has been difficult to predict over the last decade, there are still things we can count on seeing every NFL season.  We know there are 17 weeks to a season and we tend to know who will be off to the postseason once the schedule is up.

We know what teams will do well and what teams struggle. We know what players to rely on for fantasy football and we know that eventually our fantasy football teams will be blown up by some season-ending injury.

But through it all, there are 10 reliable moments we anticipate every season that never fail to meet expectations.

Rex Ryan can't help himself behind a microphone. Whether a win or loss, it is a guarantee that Ryan will step up to the mic and drop classic bombs that end up all over the back pages. Whether underestimating his team, slapping down the opposing coaching staff, mocking the refs, or yucking it up with media, Ryan is a reporter's dream.

There is no bigger stage than a New York postgame press conference where Ryan uses his quote-busting pulpit to entertain football fans everywhere.

There is no bigger self-promoter in today's NFL than Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. His biggest promotional tool? Twitter. Ochocinco, who has his own web show as well, uses Twitter to not only keep fans updated about eating McDonald's for the fourth time in a day, but to lay down challenges as well.

Most recently, he got into a Twitter feud with FOX Sports writer Mark Kreigel over Kreigel's disparaging remarks about Ochocinco. The Bengals receiver also used Twitter to offer a challenge to Chris Johnson in a foot race for Haiti.

Ochocinco can't stay away from Twitter, and that shouldn't change this season.

The Manning Face

4 of 10

Peyton made it famous and Eli continued the trend. The "Manning Face" is the most notable expression in football. Whether after an interception, a dropped pass, or a poor play, the "Manning Face" is a tool for mocking and derision of the Manning Brothers and also serves as a good drinking game while watching the Colts or Giants.

The Giants and Colts play each other in Week Two of this upcoming season where there may be enough "Manning Faces" to blow up your TV set.

Jerry Jones Paces the Sidelines

5 of 10

The big man in Big D simply can't help himself. When the clock clicks down, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones makes his way down to the sidelines. There, he paces back and forth like a man waiting for bad news from the doctor while making his head coaches sweat through their shirts.

It does not matter if it's Week One or a playoff game, Jerry Jones is going to get on the sidelines and hover over his head coach like a moth to a flame.

Jay Cutler Will Throw a Game Away

Jay Cutler led the league in interceptions thrown last season. That is a huge problem for the Bears, who simply are not going to get where they want to go until Cutler stops turning over the ball. On more than one occasion last season, Cutler literally threw the game away with a four-INT and five-INT night.

While Cutler has the talent to be better than that, it probably will not come too quickly. He is still learning not to be careless with the ball and as a result there will be one ugly day where Cutler will throw three, four, or five interceptions and cost the Bears a game.

ESPN Camps Out on Brett Favre's Lawn

7 of 10

Every summer for the last, well seemingly forever, ESPN has been on 24/7 Brett Favre Watch during the summer. Whether it be Ed Werder or Rachel Nichols, ESPN sets up camp on Brett Favre's lawn, the local high school, the Vikings practice facility, or anywhere they think Brett Favre will be.

That will be no different in a few weeks when the pressure will mount for Brett Favre to make his decision about playing in 2010. When that decision comes, you bet Nichols or Werder will be there to give us minute-by-minute updates.
