Is Loic Remy the 'Nice' Striker that Liverpool FC Needs?

Kaustav BoseJul 16, 2010

The transfer market has thus far linked as many as 54 names to the Anfield outfit. None saw the light of day, although the speculation surrounding Jovanovic has faded off due to obvious reasons.

What has gained the most popularity has been the range of players that have been linked. Right from Stefano Okaka because he was once a darling to Hodgson to the Ghana hotshot Asamoah Gyan.

With none of the above really being a hit, we now have a new one (as usual!). Reports are rife that Liverpool FC and Tottenham are leading the chase to sign Loic Remy from the French Ligue one club, nice.

Earlier reports, however, had linked the nice striker with a move to Arsenal, and in recent times it has been relegation contenders West Ham who made their desire to sign the striker known.

Realistically speaking, Liverpool FC have no other choice seemingly other than sell and replace their stars or go for gambles with their current financial state looming large. Roy Hodgson's arrival has however met with cautious air at Anfield.

Clearly after knowing that his predecessor was highly criticized for the gamble buys he made, Hodgson's reported interests have been usually cheaper options. However, Roy Hodgson has also lately made it clear that a lot of stars at the club are "disenchanted", and he also stated that the club was finding it tough to hold on to all of them, although they were all making an honest attempt.

He also pleaded patience to the club's fans and not read much into the gossip around.

Now, with reports pointing to Remy just days after such confessions, a lot of hype was bound to come along.

However, Loic Remy is quite an able player for the French outfit, although he is yet to achieve a Big-star-status outside France . At 23, Remy is considered one of the big talents in his country. Quite capable of handling the wings, the 6 ft striker has been quite productive upfront as a striker whilst his stay at Nice.

With due respect to all his abilities, a move from Nice to Liverpool FC is bound to pose a much bigger challenge to the ex-Lyon player, on all fronts.

Liverpool faces a host of other problems in the camp though, with star players Gerrard and Torres wanting more top-class signings at the club, wouldn't it be really a little surprising to believe that the club is pondering on moves for the sixth and ninth highest goal scorers from the French Ligue one in the form of Loic Remy and Asamoah Gyan respectively.

Remy has made it clear though that of the reported interests from the Spurs and Liverpool, he finds the later a more attractive option because of the heritage of the club. He however, did  also mention that the Spurs were an interesting option too.

Thus, if in reality a reported 12m bid be made for the striker, only Champions League football could lure him anyway other than Liverpool.

With Hodgson having been linked with all his favorites at Fulham, it would not be surprising if either of Remy, Ruiz or Gyan make it to the Red-side of Merseyside.

However, in order to keep their stars and the core of the club intact, are such buys really the order of the day?

The answer could be double-edged. Positive outcomes could etch Hodgson a place in history whereas in case of a negative outcome only Liverpool FC would stand to bleed.

As a fan, I expect Roy Hodgson to believe in his decision and to make an informed choice, choosing the best from the lot. Whether Remy fits that bill, there will always be doubts until if/when he comes and proves otherwise.
