James Toney: Selling Crazy or Making Sense?

Curtis ClontzJul 13, 2010

Everyone in the MMA stratosphere knows the argument, and at some point has been asked for their opinion.  Who would win in the classic boxer vs. MMA fighter bout?  The answer to this question may never be at our disposal, but the up coming fight between James Toney and Randy Couture is sure to add fuel to the fire.

In recent days boxer extraordinaire James Toney has been doing his best to make sure everyone inside MMA knows his name.  He is doing his best to stand on top of the mountain with a bull horn screaming look at me.

Depending on which sport you favor, you will think Toney is either trying to sell crazy or simply making sense.

Recently he told MMAWeekly Radio, “After I knock out Randy Couture, I’m coming for Brock’s bitch a$$ next.”

Toney is a showman that is a great boxer.  Don't get it twisted, Toney is a dangerous man.  The boxer's record currently stands at 72-6.  A very impressive pro record for any sport, let alone prize fighting.

That being said, every MMA fan knows the story of Randy Couture.  The Natural could be the best heavyweight in the UFC to face such a challenge.  Couture has the skills to take it to the ground and control Toney.

Additionally, Randy is intelligent enough to take the fight to the ground.  Although his stand up game is solid, he knows the longer he stands with Toney the better chance Toney has.

Couture fans will also remember the shocking upset by Brock Lesnar.  Randy was dropped by was appeared to be a glancing blow.  That will put fear into some fans, Toney has a lot more power in his hands.  Something that Couture fans should worry about.

This fight is going to have all of the fireworks required for a great fight.  Unfortunately Couture will not feed into Toney's reindeer games.  Randy is smart and will be ready to execute a sound game plan.

James Toney better be prepared, because if not his bout against Randy Couture will look like his loss to Roy Jones Jr.—long, one sided, and upsetting for him and his camp.
