#4 to The Meadowlands? He's Got My Vote

       Assuming that within the next couple of days, Brett Favre applies for reinstatement to the NFL and is granted it by Commissioner Goodell, Green Bay should start to seriously consider trading him to another club. At this point I think it's clear that he's burned his bridges with the Packers and vise versa. Although there are a variety of destinations where he could end up, here's why I, an NFL fan, albeit a New Yorker, think that the Jets make the most sense for all parties involved.

       Firstly, Brett Favre offers teams a short term solution at the quarterback position, as he is 38 years old and likely would stay only one year wherever he goes. He has the desire to win now; otherwise he wouldn't be coming back. He needs to be on a team that is built to win now. The Jets are just that. They spend heavily in free agency, bringing in Alan Faneca, Calvin Pace, and Favre favorite and lontime teammate, TE Bubba Franks. Additionally, they added Vernon Golston in the draft. Especially on offense, the Jets are an aging team and its unclear how many more extremely productive years they'll see out of guys like WR Laverneus Coles and RB Thomas Jones. Furthermore, after a terrific first year that earned him the nickname "Mangenius" and an appearence on the Sopranos, head coach Eric Mangini and the Jets endured a horrible 2007-08 campaign in a year where their NFC counterparts, the Giants, and their coach, Tom Coughlin, won the Super Bowl. The Jets desperately need to matter in New York again and in the entire NFL, and getting Favre makes them an instant contender He surely feels the heat in a city that demands a winner every year on a team that last won the Super Bowl under Joe Namath in 1968-69. It's unclear what kind of patience owner Woody Johnson will or will not have with Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum. Mangini shouls also be nervous as to wheather or not he'll be able to obtain another head coaching job in the NFL after his all to public tiff concerning illegal filming of defensive signals with former friend and mentor Bill Belicek of the Patriots. Head coaching in the NFL is very much an old boys club, and its unclear if they'd want Mangini around any more if they think he's a rat. Mangini and Tannenbaum know the writing is on the wall. The Brett Favre move makes sense for two men whose very jobs likely depend on what happens this season.

       Secondly, this move makes a lot of sense for Favre and the Jets because he'd be the clear cut starter the minute he set foot at training camp. The Jets, by all accounts, have no clear cut starting quarterback at this point. Many question what veteran Chad Pennington has left in the tank, or what he ever had in the tank in the first place. The youngster Kellen Clemens did not turn heads in his time as starting QB last year, and it's tenuous as to wheather the orgainzation is sold on him at this point, as there was a lot of chatter that they were looking into trying to acquire Boston College QB Matt Ryan in the draft. That fell through as the Falcons selected Ryan to dig them out of the hole in which Micheal Vick left them. Surely Clemens could benefit from a year of learning under Brett Favre in a backup role. In alot of ways, the Jets current quarterback situation is not unlike the Bears predicament with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman, which brings me to my next point.

       The Jets are the team that make the most sense to the Packers as a trade partner. They will refuse to trade him within their own division the Bears and the Vikings. The Buccaneers are a feesible option, but I think the Jets are wiling to give up more for him. I think the Jets allow Favre the best chance to win right now, and the Packers the best chance to save face by trading him not just out of the NFC North division, but out of the conference altogether. This way, he won't be able to burn them in the playoffs and the wounds he's opened in Green Bay will have more time and oppurtunity to mend.

       Finally, Brett Favre should come to the Jets just because it would make for great football and great drama. Imagine Favre versus Brady, Jets versus Pats, twice a year, maybe in the playoffs on the frozen tundra in Foxboro or the Meadowlands. After playing in Green Bay in the winter, 30 degrees at gamtime should be a walk in the park.
